The 73-year-old CM was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on Saturday.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai on Friday night. Sources at Apollo Hospital in Chennai have confirmed to TNM that the 73-year-old Kerala CM has been admitted to the hospital. As per a medical bulletin issued by Apollo Hospitals on Saturday, Pinarayi was admitted at 11.55pm on Friday for a "routine annual medical check up". The bulletin, signed by Dr RK Venkatesalam, who is Joint Director Medical Services at Apollo Main Hospital, states that the CM will be discharged on Sunday.  According to reports, Pinarayi Vijayan was admitted following a dip in his blood count. The Times of India reported that Pinarayi Vijayan is being monitored by a team of doctors including infectious diseases experts. However, the CM's office maintains that Pinarayi Vijayan hasn't been admitted to hospital, but it was his wife who was taken to Apollo Hospital for a check-up. On Friday, the Kerala Chief Minister had visited the family of Madhu, a victim of mob justice at Attappadi in Palakkad. Announcing a slew of tribal welfare measures following the visit, Pinarayi also promised to take strict action against the perpetrators of the crime. Madhu was beaten to death by a mob, who accused him of stealing groceries. He died on his way to the police station.

ATM Robbery
In a film style ATM robbery, 20 people lost about Rs 4.5 lakhs in Thiruvananthapuram in 2016.
The international cell of the Kerala Crime Branch has brought a Romanian to Thiruvananthapuram from Nicaragua in connection with a 2016 ATM heist, State Police Chief Loknath Behra said. He said the Romanian was picked up by the Nicaraguan authorities following alerts by the Interpol. Behra told reporters on Saturday that a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM heist was done in Thiruvananthapuram on August 8, 2016, by a gang of five Romanian nationals. The Romanian nationals tampered with the SBI ATM using duplicate ATM cards and withdrew Rs 2.50 lakh."While one Romanian national was arrested then, the others managed to escape. We took the help of the Interpol and we had shared the information of the four other Romanian nationals. Our officers went to Nicaragua and have brought Alexandro. We have now managed to track out the two others who were part of the gang out of which one of them is based now in Germany and the other in the UK. We have shared all the information with these countries and are expecting that once they are arrested there, by the local authorities, they will be tried there using our case history or if they can be brought here, we will bring them down. We are confident of tracking the fifth accused also," said Behra. Soon after the fraud was detected, the police got into action and arrested one of them and since then was on the lookout for the rest of the gang who were all identified from their passports, which they had submitted while checking into a hotel."This case has got the award from Nasscom for being the best probed cyber case and our officials who took part in the investigation were also awarded for their efforts. Now, the state police also will reward them for their hard work," added Behra. The case was cracked after state’s Special Investigation Team  obtained CCTV video from the SBI ATM at Althara Junction near Vellayambalam, where all the fraudulent transactions were carried out. The video showed three people attaching an electronic device at the ATM counter, enabling the fraudsters to collect the PIN code and card details. The device that was fixed above the ATM machine, had a micro camera and another device was placed in the card slot of the machine. According to the police, the micro camera might have helped in getting the ATM PINs.

‘Are boys hired for Attukal Pongala ritual?’: Kerala writer sparks fresh row

Controversy
Lekshmy, who wrote Attukal Amma: The Goddess of Millions, says for the first time in 35 years she refused to offer Pongala after learning about what is happening at the ritual.
The row over Kuthiyottam, a ritual which is a part of the Pongala festival at the famous Attukal Devi temple in Thiruvananthapuram, triggered by DGP (Prisons) R Sreelekha’s blog post, has taken a new turn, with writer Lekshmy Rajeev also speaking out against it. Lekshmy, who has authored the book, Attukal Amma: The Goddess of Millions published in 2016, on Friday said that she returned from the temple without offering pongala to the deity. This after she learnt that some of the boys, who perform the ritual, had been hired for the purpose. The temple pongala, an annual event, where lakhs of women take part, was held on Friday. Lekshmy, who is a devotee of the temple goddess, has been offering pongala for the past 35 years. The reason Lekshmy did not offer pongala this year, she says, is on account of what she came to know about Kuthiyottam. Taking to Facebook on Friday, the writer said, "We got space to offer pongala. We were sitting at a home. The male head of the family told me that his son had performed Kuthiyottam. He even took a class on the necessity of Kuthiyottam. Then he seemed busy with other things. Then I asked his son who was sitting there, didn’t it hurt you? The boy said, "Aunty it was not me who did it. My father had hired another boy to perform it for me. Then I called someone and asked if boys are hired for Kuthiyottam in Attukal, he said ‘yes’, to perform for the sons of rich people," the post reads. While many hit out at her post, Lekshmy tells TNM that it was the boy’s truth that made her change her mind about offering pongala. “I was told by a boy on Friday that his father hired someone else to perform the ritual in his name. I was all ready to offer pongala as I have been doing for the past 35 years. I was at the house and I kept everything ready to offer pongala,” she says. Lekshmy told TNM that she did not want to reveal the name of the family. She says, “I don’t want to disclose details about the family, as I don’t want to drag them into trouble. The boy’s father gave me a long lecture on why Kuthiyottam is so sacred. After he left, his son… the boy told me ‘Aunty things are not as my father said, in my case it was not me who did it, but some other boy hired by my father,”.  Lekshmy goes on to say, “I am not sure if it’s the temple authorities or the families who arrange boys for the Kuthiyottam and whether they offer money for the children.  I called up a friend of mine who is associated with the temple in some way. He was not surprise when I asked the question ‘Do the temple authorities and families hire boys to perform Kuthiyottam?’ Instead he asked, ‘Didn’t you know that it is common? It’s a common thing. I don’t how much the temple people or the families pay for the boys, may not be that big amount. They bring boys from Tamil Nadu so that they need to pay less.’” Saying she was in shock when she learnt what was happening, she chose to leave the place without offering pongala.  “Attukal goddess is the supreme power I trust upon. But at that moment I felt that I should leave, I didn’t even take my things. I had a huge mental tension. Even now my I am going through that, but I couldn’t help but speak against it. My open message was also to declare solidarity with Sreelekha madam. She is a senior officer. More than that she is a woman, if it was a man I wouldn’t have supported this. Sreelekha also has been offering pongala for 47 years,” she says. Kuthiyottam is a ritual in which an iron hook is pierced into young boys. The boys are made to stay at the temple for some days to prepare them for the ritual. In her blog post published on Tuesday, DGP of Prisons R Sreelekha termed Kuthiyottam as "cruelty", and said that the ritual is a criminal activity, where the children are not even capable of realising that a crime is being committed on them.  Lekshmy took more than five years to complete Attukal Amma: The Goddess of Millions, which is one of the most comprehensive books about the temple. When asked if she had suspected anything about Kuthiyottam during the research of her book, she says, “Something had struck my mind at that time as well. But how would we assume such strange things would be there. I won’t offer pongala anymore until the temple authorities reforms Kuthiyottam. They should give due respect to the boys taking part in it, they should be allowed to dress well rather than giving the one layered mundu, which is too transparent that reveals the entire body of the boys. It’s a shame for boys of this age no? Also piercing should be ended”. Lekshmy continues, “There are many other unpleasing things as well about the temple. But I don’t want to talk about it now. I don’t want to go through the same painful experience which I had passed through once by recollecting them now. It is a comprehensive book, but the temple authorities tried to suppress it sale as well as its content.”

The Congress leaders took the opportunity to flay the CPI (M)’s recent decision not to have any pact or alliance with other secular parties to defeat the BJP.
Tripura, one of the last bastions of the Left has fallen. The 25-year rule of the CPI (M)-led Left government in the state came to an end on Saturday, as the BJP and its ally won the assembly election. After losing Tripura, the only state where the party remains in power now is Kerala.  Congress leaders took the opportunity to flay the CPI (M)’s recent decision not to have any pact or alliance with other secular parties to defeat the BJP. Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy criticised the CPI (M) saying that its inability to understand the reality of Indian politics caused its downfall. “The election result in Tripura shows the necessity of the secular forces to unite," he added. Indian Union Muslim League General Secretary KPA Majeed said that the result is disappointing. “It has been proved that the CPI (M) alone can’t defeat the BJP and the party’s policy at the national level is wrong.” “When the CPI (M) took on BJP in Tripura, the Congress wanted the victory of the Left party, said Congress MLA K Muraleedharan. He was responding to CPI (M) Politburo member MA Baby's statement that it was Congress votes that paved the way for the victory of the BJP. “The Congress is not able to win seats for itself through its own votes, then how can it help the BJP,” Muraleedharan said satirically. The BJP office in the state capital celebrated the victory with party workers raising slogans. BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan said that by saying that the BJP gained the victory through sabotage, the CPI (M) is not facing the reality. “The result is born out of the anti-people policies of the CPI (M). By saying that the victory is won through money, CPI (M) is humiliating the ordinary people of the state,” he said. Former state president of the BJP, V Muraleedharan put a Facebook post which read, “Saffron win in north east, one-third majority.” CPI (M) leader and former MP KN Balagopal said, “It is the result of the BJP’s philosophy of winning power at any cost. The BJP has resorted to winning power in a precarious way. They would join hands with even the terrorists to gain power, with least attention to developmental issues, which is also evident from the election result.” Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said results clearly show the need for a "united fight against the BJP". Meanwhile, CPI (M)'s detractors in Kerala had a field day, rubbing the loss into the Left party's wounds. While CPI (M) leader Prakash Karat and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan came under the most fierce attack, party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also came in for flak for his statement at the party conference in Thrissur last week that state leaders should not forget that CPI (M) is "not just limited to CPI-M in Kerala". Social media users pointed out that the Left party had indeed become 'Communist Party of Kerala-Marxist'. A meme of a coffin with 'Tripura' written on it is being carried by Vijayan, state party Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and former Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan. Another meme shows two leading comedians of Malayalam cinema lying bandaged in a cot, with the words 'Bengal' and 'Tripura' and saying there is one more (Kerala) who will be coming in very soon.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, admitted for a routine annual medical check-up at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai a day earlier, was discharged on Saturday evening. Vijayan was admitted at 11:55 pm on March 2 for the check-up, the hospital had said in a medical bulletin earlier. The statement added that Vijayan, a Communist Party of India-Marxist leader, would be discharged on Sunday. However, he was seemingly discharged earlier than previously expected. The bulletin was signed by Dr RK Venkatesalam, who is Joint Director Medical Services at Apollo Main Hospital. According to reports, Pinarayi Vijayan was admitted following a dip in his blood count. Earlier an official of the hospital told IANS that Vijayan was admitted under an urologist and his check-ups were still going on. The CM's office initially maintained that Pinarayi Vijayan hasn't been admitted to hospital, but it was his wife who was taken to Apollo Hospital for a check-up. Later on Saturday evening, Pinarayi and his wife left the hospital and travelled to the state guest house in Chennai.  Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan visited the Kerala CM at the state guest house and inquired about his health. His newly launched party Makkal Needhi Maiam's Twitter handle posted pictures of the meeting.  In the run-up to his party launch, the actor turned politician had met with Chief Minister Pinarayi last year and had sought his advice on politics. IANS inputs

Days after the warning issued by the MeT department which suggested that 2018 was likely to be the hottest recorded year for Kerala, Palakkad on Saturday recorded a temperature of 41 degree Celsius this year. According to the MeT officials the temperature recorded this summer in Palakkad is three degrees more than the temperature recorded during the same time last year, in the district. The weather forecast for Palakkad on Saturday was 41 degree Celsius maximum, while the minimum was 20 degree Celsius. Meanwhile, neighbouring areas of Palakkad like Malampuzha-II, Pudussery, Pirayiri, Mathur, Kannadi and Thenkurissi recorded 40 degree Celsius on Saturday. Reports also state that Palakkad on Friday had recorded 39 degree Celsius. State Action Plan on Climatic Change (SAPCC) had listed Palakkad as one of the climate change hotspots in the state. According to reports, Palakkad has been experiencing a bitter rise in temperatures during summer accompanied with acute shortage of drinking water. The situation has only been worsened with most of the water resources drying up including the Bharatapuzha river. India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials had earlier warned that the year 2018 was most likely going to be the warmest year on record for Kerala. Officials also warned that average temperatures over many of the subdivisions in northwest and neighbouring central India are likely to be above normal by one degree Celsius, while the southern states will see temperatures go up by 0.5 to 1 degree Celsius. The state government had issued a warning already about the same and also issued a directive to change the shift timings for workers to 3pm-12am or 5pm-7am, so as to avoid working during the day. The Health Department also issued warnings of a possible outbreak of disease and asked people to take precautions to keep themselves from falling sick during the summer.

Though the faction headed by Minister K.E. Ismail stood against the decision, C. Divakaran withdrew from the contest citing the need for unity in the party.
Kanam Rajendran was on Sunday unanimously elected for a second three-year term as the Kerala secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI). The 67-year-old veteran trade union leader is a former two-time legislator. Rajendran first became the secretary at the Kottayam state conference in 2015, and on Sunday he was given another term. Meanwhile there is a section in the party which opposed the move to re-elect Rajendran. The faction headed by former Kerala Minister and former Rajya Sabha member K.E. Ismail stood against the decision. They tried to put up a candidate against Rajendran but failed after former Kerala Minister and senior legislator C. Divakaran withdrew from the contest citing the need for unity in the party. Divakaran decided to back out after he felt that the best way to maintain unity in the party was to avoid a contest. Later, speaking to the media, Rajendran said he will continue to promote the need for Left unity."I will also be very careful and cautious as I go forward as the state secretary. Those who are unhappy with what is happening, can approach the higher bodies in our party," said Rajendran, dropping hints that his detractors in the party will be after him. Meanwhile after reconstituting the council a few senior leaders were dropped from the council. Vazhoor Soman, a senior leader from Idukki and a Kanam loyalist has been reportedly dropped from the council. A P Achuthan, a top leader of the Ismail faction, has also been dropped. Another Isamil loyalist Easwari Resan, a tribal leader from Palakkad, also lost her membership in the council.  The CPI is the second biggest ally in the ruling Pinarayi Vijayan government. Rajendran has time and again taken up cudgels against Vijayan and the latest grouse is on aligning with the Congress. While the CPI is keen to have an electoral tie-up with the Congress, the Vijayan faction in the CPI-M is dead against it.

The revised wages were announced in November 2017 and the nurses have been protesting against the delay in implementation for 196 days now.

After Saturday’s talks with the Labour Commission about revised payments for nurses failed to bear fruit, the United Nurses Association (UNA) has decided to go on an indefinite strike from February 6. The association with launch the new indefinite strike on Tuesday, due to the High Court stay on the earlier strike which prohibited them from taking leave from the hospitals. The nurses aim to launch the strike after displaying on record that there are on leave. The ongoing strike has continuing for the past 196 days at KVM Hospital in Alappuzha and the hospital authorities have not met the demands put forward by the nurses yet.  Talking to TNM, UNA State working president Shoby Joseph said that the hospital authorities did not even turn up for the meeting with the Labour Commission. “The protest has been going on for many days now and to date, none of the officials could meet our demands. On Saturday, we had a meeting with the Labour Commission but the KVM authorities did not even turn up”, she said. The revised wages for nurses were announced in November 2017 and the nurses have been protesting the delay in implementation of the new wages. Further, excess working hours and unsatisfactory bonuses were other reasons that triggered the strike.  “According to the labour laws nurses are not allowed to work more than 8 hours. However, they are made to work around 16 hours and are even scheduled odd hour shifts. Further, nurses are supposed to be given a bonus of Rs 7500 but are paid only Rs 500. The minimum wages mandated since 2013 is also not paid to the nurses”, added Shoby. Despite the 2013 revision of wages to INR 11,500 base salary per month, the actual payment received by nurses at KVM hospital ranges from INR 6,000 to 9,000, according to reports The High Court stay on the strike will be considered on Monday and the UNA authorities have confirmed that if the stay continues, then they would take leave and protest. “We will fight till justice is served”, said Shoby.

‘Clerical error, will reply’: Alappuzha DC Anupama on HC rap for Thomas Chandy notice

The HC criticised the collector for issuing a notice to the ex-minister in a land encroachment case, with a wrong survey number.
Alappuzha Collector TV Anupama was pulled up by the Kerala High Court for issuing notice with a wrong survey number to ex-minister Thomas Chandy’s company. The Collector, in a report in August last year, accused the Minister’s Lake Palace resort of encroaching on a lake illegally, and also of levelling a paddy field to build a parking lot. She had issued a notice to the businessman-politician to appear before her on February 23, that Chandy had contested in court. On Friday, the High Court pulled up the Collector for sending notices with the wrong survey number, and quashed the notices sent to the former minister. Following this, the Collector has said that the issue was the result of a ‘clerical error’ and that she would reply to the court once she got the order. The case The entire row over Thomas Chandy's land grab surfaced after Alappuzha district collector TV Anupama submitted a report to Revenue Principal Secretary PH Kurian in August. The report stated that portions of Marthandam Lake had been levelled for building the Minister’s Lake Palace Resort. The report also said that a paddy field was levelled to build a parking lot for the resort. The controversy forced the resignation of Thomas Chandy, who belongs to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and was the Transport Minister of Kerala. A day before he resigned, the High Court had dismissed Chandy’s plea to dismiss Anupama’s report. Wrong survey numbers However, on Friday, the High Court pulled up Anupama for the notice she issued, seeking  explanation with respect to the alleged encroachment and reclamation of backwaters by the minister. According to media reports, Justice AK Jayasankaran took the Collector to task for entering the wrong survey number and block number in the notice. In a statement, the Collector has clarified that there were two notices issued to the company: The first one had a wrong survey number, therefore it was replaced by a second notice, Anupama said, calling it a clerical error. “There was no mistake in the survey number in the second letter. It will be brought to the notice of the court once the order is available. If the court believed that the second notice too had an error, will approach the court to point this out,” Anupama said. She also said that if there was something suspicious in how an error had crept in, she would order an inquiry. However, the HC judge Justice Jayasankaran reportedly said that it was not a mere typographical error, and that the Collector failed to apply her mind. “The Collector had the responsibility to verify the numbers. The notice was issued based on wrong numbers,” he reportedly said.   ‘Controversial’ Facebook post Following the statement, the Collector reportedly put out a Facebook post on Saturday, quoting a poem by Nikita Gill: “They may defeat you, injure you and insult you, but you like a phoenix know how to resurrect.” While the post made no mention of the Thomas Chandy case of the High Court judgment, some people believe it was in reference to that. However, the post was reportedly taken down soon.

In a tragic incident in Kerala’s Kollam district, a police officer was mowed down by a truck while he was on duty trying to help the victims of a road mishap.   The incident occurred at Kulakkada on the MC Road near Kottarakkara on Sunday morning around 5:30 am. The deceased, who has been identified as 34-year-old Vipin Kumar, was the driver of highway patrol vehicle.  Vipin was accompanied by two other officers, Venugopal (54) and Ashokan (51), who were also seriously injured. The police patrol team, including Vipin, was trying to rescue the passengers of a car, all mimicry artistes, who had met with an accident at Kulakkada at the time of the incident.  The car had rammed into an electric post and the officials had rushed to the spot for rescue operations. The passengers in the car suffered minor injuries and were shifted to a hospital by the police officials.  Following this, the team was preparing the records for the accident when a speeding lorry crushed them. The truck driver fled the scene soon after the incident, but was nabbed later by the police.  He was identified as Suresh Kumar, a native of Malampuzha.  Meanwhile, residents at the scene swung into action and rushed the police officials to hospital.  However, Vipin was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.  Vipin is survived by his wife, Anju, and three-year-old son, Karthik.  The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem at Thiruvananthapuram MCH.  The body was later kept for at the Armed Reserve Police camp at Kollam and at the Kottarakkara DSP office complex for his colleagues to pay their last respects.  Reacting to the incident, CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.  He also promised the family all support from the government.  DGP Loknath Behera also expressed grief over the incident and promised all help to the injured police officers and their families

Child rights
Activists say that parents cannot get away with subjecting their children to such practices, claiming that their children have consented to it.
"The boy you see in the photograph is my son and both of us are willing to go through the seven days of separation that Kuthiyottam ritual demands. I am a believer, and I want my son to grow up following those same religious beliefs." This is what Suchithra Sreekumar, the mother of a young boy from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, wrote on Facebook recently. She was reacting to a photograph of her son standing on a railing and weeping, clicked and shared by Jithesh Damodar, a photographer with Kerala Kaumudi. Jithesh had put a caption that the photo showed the situation of young boys who will perform the Kuthiyottam ritual in the Attukal temple. While Suchithra’s concerns about the privacy of her son being violated are indeed valid – what about the rights of the child in deciding to follow religious rituals that are distressing to them? How much control do parents have on the bodies of their children, and how far can they make them do religious rituals that are potentially dangerous? Kuthiyottam at Attukal Pongala As lakhs of women in Kerala take part in the famed Pongala conducted as part of a 10-day festival at Attukal Bhagavathy temple, several hundred young boys are separated from their families for the Kuthiyottam ritual. In the ritual of Kuthiyottam, young boys between the ages of 8 and 12 who are considered to be the "soldiers of the goddess", stay at the temple for seven days to undergo "penance." At the end of the seven days, the boys are decked up and an iron hook is pierced through their flank, and the blood that comes out is believed to be an offering to the goddess. The Attukal temple website explains the ritual as: "For the purpose they have to pass through rigorous physical and mental discipline such as sleeping in mat, observing strict diet restrictions, staying in the temple etc. Kuthiyottam performed by boys with the hope that the Goddess almighty would be pleased to bestow on them beauty inward and outward, health, wealth and happiness." (sic) The controversial ritual has been in the news recently after DGP (Prisons) R Sreelekha questioned the decades old practice, and called it cruelty towards children and child abuse."Yes, recite mantras and obey blindly their leaders too. They are not allowed to see their parents during this time. And on the final day, each of them will be decked up with yellow cloths, garlands, jewellery and make up on face including lipstick and made to stand in a queue for their last unexpected torture. An iron hook, tiny though it is, will be pierced into their skin on their flanks. They scream. Blood comes out. A thread will be symbolically knotted through the hooks to symbolise their bond with divinity. Then hooks are pulled out and ash roughly applied on the wounds! All this for temple deity! Parents may feel relieved that their boys will now grow up to be disciplined kids and do well in their studies. Will the kids too feel the same? And how will our dear Attukal Amma be feeling?" Sreelekha wrote in her blog. However, several parents have defended the ritual, claiming it is part of their religious belief, and pointing fingers at other religions to justify their actions.   Drawing a line But child rights activists say that religion and belief cannot justify every act, and that parents must draw a line when it comes to taking decisions regarding their children’s bodies and their lives. UNICEF Kerala-Tamil Nadu region chief Job Zachariah tells TNM that a lot depends on whether the child’s fundamental rights are being violated by the parents. "In the case of children, if any of the decisions taken by their parents do harm to them or violate their rights, then that is where the limit lies. It is the same principle that works in the case of vaccination. When a parent refuses to administer vaccines to their child, they are violating the child's right by doing so,” Job says. On the Kuthiyottam ritual specifically, Job says that parents shouldn’t exercise their power to decide for children when their decision can put the child in harm’s way. In situations like these, the state is entitled to intervene, Job points out. "Take the example of a father who prevented his wife from breastfeeding their newborn baby citing religious beliefs. The police booked him for violating the child's right. So when a parent fails to prevent a violation from happening, the state should ensure that it intervenes," he adds. What if children ‘consent’? Several parents argue that their children have not objected to taking part in the ritual and that the ritual was for the good of the children. To this, Job says: "Children won't complain, even if they do not like what is being done to them. We have conditioned them like that. Even when parents beat their children to teach them discipline, the children don’t complain.” That doesn’t make it right, he explains. He asserts that instead of looking at the ritual as ‘religion’, it must be dealt with as a social evil so that the best interest of the child can be protected. Shobha Koshy, the Chairman of Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights says that the commission will look into allegations that the ritual violates the children's rights. She says that parents cannot get away with subjecting their children to such practices, claiming that their children have consented to it."More often, children cannot make decisions, they are unable to understand what is right and wrong. Will these parents, who claim that their child has consented to the practice, be okay if the child makes a decision on his own that the parents do not agree with? Say a child gets married at the age of 12 and defends it saying he did it out of his own accord, is that an acceptable argument? To what extent does the child understand the consequences?" she asks. The issue of a child's privacy Both Job and Shobha Koshy agree that publishing a photograph in which the boy is identifiable is not justified. They feel that although the photograph was used to expose a violation, the child's identity has been jeopardized in the process."In situations like this, the photo could have been taken in such a way that it does not reveal the identity of the child. Say for instance, a photo of a child begging in the street is published to expose the social evil, but even then, it is not essentially right to have the child's face in it, although it is for a good cause," Job points out. Echoing his thoughts, Shobha shares an incident from Kannur, where the photo of a child in need of money for treatment was massively shared on social media."The dignity of the child has to be protected always. In the case in Kannur, although people came to know about the child's condition through these messages, we urged people not to use her photograph," she says.

A pet Persian cat was separated from its owners and deported to its home country on Friday after customs authorities at Kochi airport said that the airport was not the preferred route for the feline to travel. The couple, who was travelling on March 2 from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Kochi on Saudia Airlines brought their pet along with them. The cat was seized and detained by airport authorities, according to Deccan Chronicle. According to Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar, Kochi airport was not a recognised route for importing pets. Furthermore, the couple also reportedly did not carry the necessary documents with them for bringing a pet to India."Importing of pets is only allowed after production of required health certificate from the country of origin and examination by our animal quarantine office," he told The New Indian Express. “Strangely enough, the airline permitted the animal on board without any documents, causing all the confusion,” Sumit told The Hindu. For these reasons, the customs authorities asked Saudia Airlines to send the cat back to Jeddah. According to Kumar, the import of pets is allowed in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad airports as these airports have an animal quarantine facility which can examine and clear the pets immediately. Further, the owners of the cat were also slapped with Rs 5000 as a fine for importing the cat without proper documents. Saudia airlines, in which they flew, were also served with a show notice in this regard, the report stated.  So how can pets be imported? According to the guidelines of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), all pets entering the country with their owners have to be issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Animal Quarantine Station, whether they are accompanied or unaccompanied. All pets entering India by air must also either come as checked baggage (for accompanied pets) or air cargo (unaccompanied pets) through airports that have quarantine stations. In case of unaccompanied pets, the animals must arrive within 30 days of the arrival of their owners, according to the guidelines. All pets accompanying their owners on short visits to the country need a DGFT license and also have to depart with their owners, the guidelines further state.

Kerala CM’s statement comes days after an expatriate businessman killed himself after CPI’s youth wing allegedly demanded a bribe from him.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan came down heavily on trade unions in the state for continuing to demand ‘gawking wages’ (nokkukooli), on Monday. Nookukooli is a practice supported by trade unions in Kerala, where head load workers demand payment for merely watching the goods get loaded or unloaded, while industrialists or merchants or common householders use their own labour for the work. If the head load workers step in to unload/load the goods, the investors will have to pay through their nose for the service. Read more about nokkukooli here. The CM made the statement against the practice in the Kerala Assembly, while speaking about Sugathan, an expatriate businessman who killed himself a few weeks ago after CPI's youth wing allegedly demanded a bribe from him for opening a workshop.  Pinarayi Vijayan said that a meeting of trade union representatives will be convened to work towards putting an end to gawking wages and other unfair practices.  Saying that trade unions are essentially meant for the welfare of workers, the CM criticised the bodies saying that it has now taken up the job of "supplying" workers instead."A flag represents a union and nowadays, it is being erected everywhere. This is not a good practice," the CM said.  AIYF workers had erected their flags on the land where Sugathan was supposed to open a workshop.   Pinarayi Vijayan said that such practices bring shame to the state. The CM made the remarks while responding to a calling attention motion by MLA Adoor Prakash on Sughathan's suicide.  64-year-old Sugathan from Kollam district hanged himself to death on February 23 at a workshop he was hoping to open. His family has alleged that Sugathan chose to take his own life after being harassed by members of AIYF, who allegedly refused to let him start his business even after taking bribes from him. The illegal practice of nokkukooli has been prevalent in the state for years together. Despite the Kerala High Court directing the state police to ensure that it is not practiced, workers of trade unions continue to demand it in many places.  Industrialist Kochouseph Chittilappilly, the founder of V-Guard was one of the first in Kerala to have opposed Nookukooli. In 2014, Anupama IAS, who is now the Alappuzha District Collector had confronted a group of workers, who demanded nokkukooli.  She filed a complaint at the Medical College Police Station against Murali, the then CITU convener for demanding gawking wages.

‘A father can’t go out with daughters at night?’: Kerala moral police harass family

"Who are these girls? Where have you kidnapped them from?" a group of men allegedly asked Suresh in Kalpetta.
When Wayanad-native Suresh Babu and his two daughters set out from their home to catch a 10 pm bus to Bengaluru last week, they did not in their wildest dreams anticipate the events that would unfold next.  While the trio waited at a bus stop around 6 kms from their home in Kalpetta, self-proclaimed moral police decided to give a lecture on morality. According to Suresh, the men questioned their relationship and harassed them suggesting that he had kidnapped them and "they knew what Suresh and the girls were up to." A group of at least 15 people, all auto drivers, walked up to Suresh and his daughters - aged 13 and 18- and questioned what they were doing together at that hour. Recounting the incident, Suresh tells TNM, "Even though the bus was at 10 pm, we reached the bus stop by 9.30pm. A few minutes later, my elder daughter pointed out that a few auto drivers were staring at us and talking amongst themselves. I told her not to pay attention to any of that and we continued sitting there."  A few minutes later, one man walked up to Suresh and proceeded to question him. Despite Suresh clarifying that the girls were his daughters, the moral police refused to step aside. "The first question he asked me was, who the girls are. I told him they were my daughters. He then questioned me over why I had my hand around one of my daughter's shoulders. He said that he saw what I was doing, with my hands over her shoulder. Despite repeatedly telling him that they were my daughters, he kept saying I cannot be their father. Then a few more people joined him and started harassing us," says 43-year-old Suresh. At this point, Suresh - who does aluminium fabrication works -  says that one of the girls intervened and said that they were indeed his daughters. "But the men did not budge. They asked us to show proof that we are indeed father and daughters. Two men then caught me by my shirt collar and pushed me. They also took my daughters a few feet away from me," Suresh says.  While he was unable to reach the police on the phone despite repeated attempts, Suresh reached out to the Nirbhaya cell to complain. The ordeal continued till their bus arrived at 10.15pm, he says. "When the bus came, I had to physically pull my daughters from the crowd and we ran to get inside the bus. Once inside, I called up the women's cell to complain," Suresh says.  Public apathy All this happened in Kalpetta town, in the midst of several people. But no one came forward to help them, Suresh says.  He adds: "That's the problem with our society; nobody will react when such things happen. Plus, those men painted a picture that we are doing something immoral, so no one stepped in to help us. What is this incident indicating? That a father cannot go out at night with his daughters?"  Suresh says that the incident has caused mental trauma to his younger daughter. The 13-year-old is now scared to venture out of her home, even to go to school, fearing that the men will harm her.  Police case After returning from Bengaluru on Saturday, Suresh proceeded to file a complaint with the Kalpetta police.  Kalpetta police says that an FIR has been registered against 15 people and that they are yet to be identified. An identification parade was held on Monday when Suresh identified two men.

Kerala opposition accuses the Left of driving NRI entrepreneurs to suicide

On February 23, 64-year-old Sugathan was found hanging from the beam of the mechanic’s shed he built.
The Congress-led opposition on Monday slammed the Pinarayi Vijayan government in the state assembly for "haunting" those non-resident Keralite's (NRKs) who return to the state to set up business ventures. The opposition blamed the government for trying to hush up the case of an NRK returnee "who was forced to commit suicide after being haunted by activists of youth wing of the CPI". Former State Minister and senior Congress legislator Adoor Prakash moved the motion, accusing the state government of trying to hush up the case of the suicide of 64-year-old Sugathan in Kollam district."Sugathan took a plot of land near his home on lease to set up his own workshop after returning home from Oman. When he got the verbal sanction from the local bodies, he erected a shed there."But the local activists of the youth wing of the CPI put up a flag there, stating that it was a wetland and no construction would be allowed there. It is alleged these activists asked him to pay Rs 2 lakh. "He knocked every door for justice but to no avail. Finally, on February 25, Sugathan was found hanging from a rope in the shed that he had erected," said Prakash. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident and said three activists of the CPI had been arrested."The incident should have never happened. Of late, the practice of putting up a flag where new ventures are coming up does not augur well. Such acts will no longer be tolerated... With such incidents going on, we will reach nowhere. The case will be probed and action will be taken," said Vijayan. Unhappy with the reply of Vijayan, leader of the opposition Ramesh Chennithala said that he was told by Sugathan's family members that he had pledged gold and got Rs 63,000 which was handed over to the CPI leaders."Sugathan's family wishes to see all the culprits brought to justice, but at the moment attempts are being made to hush up the case. The CPI should see that all the accused be ousted from the party," Chennithala said and walked out of the house. But R. Sajilal, the youth wing leader of the All India Youth Federation (CPI's youth wing) told the media that what Vijayan told the house was not true."If one takes stock of the number of instances where flags have been raised, that would definitely go to Vijayan's party -- CPI-M, as it's known to all that its CPI-M who always raise flags anywhere and everywhere," said Sajilal. State Secretary Kanam Rajendran said that the need of the hour was not to take stock of raising flags, but the rate of suicides in the state. Meanwhile, the elder son of Sugathan on Monday told the media that his father's leg bore a big injury mark."We have taken the pictures of it and handed them over to the police. We want a proper probe into the entire episode," he said.

The Panchayat attempted to provide a platform for Non-resident Keralites to participate in the grama sabha, by connecting them through a simple video call.
Gram sabha meetings needn’t necessarily make news. However, an online gram sabha meeting is something unique. In a first, a village in Kerala attempted to provide a (virtual) platform for Non-Resident Keralites (NRKs) to participate in the ward level meetings by connecting them through video call.    Peruvanthanam, a remote village in Idukki, organised the online sabha, which was attended by over 20 members of the village who currently reside in Gulf countries. “We had participants from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Muscat, Qatar and other gulf countries. They all expressed an interest in participating in the grama sabha meetings, which are held every three months, when we pitched the idea of an online grama sabha. And then it took off,” said Nizar Parackal, Health and Education Standing committee chairman of the panchayat. The meeting was held at the Community hall in the Panchayat. A TV screen was set up and the video calling app IMO was used to connect with those sitting at the venue with the 20 participants abroad. The grama sabha meetings are held every three months, to discuss issues and development works in the locality. This is to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the local self-government bodies in the villages. Explaining how the committee members came up with the online grama sabha idea, Nizar, an organiser of the meet, said, “We initially planned to organise a model grama sabha where we would get Non-Resident Keralites to participate and discuss issues concerning the village. However, once talks started, we decided to organise an actual online grama sabha meet. When I discussed this with friends abroad, they were all quite eager to participate.” The meeting which went on for four hours included discussions on the development works taking place in the village. “We decided that the Peruvanthanam General Hospital required an ambulance. Educational needs of underprivileged children were also discussed. In fact, one of the participants who worked in Saudi volunteered to sponsor the education of one underprivileged child from a UP school in the village,” Nizar added. The motive of the organisers to actively involve participants residing outside Kerala through social media resulted in the successful and unique grama sabha.  Peruvanthanam is set to witness more such online sabhas in different wards in the coming months, Nizar added.

The Kerala government is planning to give the centuries old Bastion Bungalow in Fort Kochi a makeover and convert it into a world-class museum. Minister for Ports, Museums, Archaeology and Archives Kadannappally Ramachandran said that Fort Kochi and nearby Mattancherry are historically significant as they were occupied by the Portuguese, Dutch and British and were active commercial centres in the past. The renovated museum will reflect these diversities, The Hindu reported. MLA K J Maxi said that the government will take steps to ensure that the museum is opened to the public before the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018 starts in December. History The Bastion Bungalow is said to be one of the oldest buildings in Kerala. The historic monument is said to have been originally built in the 16th century as Fort Immanuel by the Portuguese. However, the structure was destroyed following an invasion by the Dutch in 1663. Only a part of the fort, called the Stormberg Bastion survived, and this was reconstructed into the Bastion Bungalow that tourists see today. Built in the Indo-European style of architecture, it was named Bastion Bungalow by the British and served as a residence-cum-office for government officials. According to the Kerala Tourism website, "Its circular structure is so captivating that when the British eventually arrived, they decided to leave that part of the original building untouched." Stories of secret underground tunnels add to the aura of the place besides also captivating tourists."Today it houses the Sub-Collector's Office, with its long, open verandas and a tiled roof in geometric patterns attracting tourists from all over the world. Made entirely of brick, laterite and wood, it is said that beneath its ground floor lies a secret network of tunnels, adding to the mystique of the entire place," it adds. After Independence, the structure was left neglected for some time before the State Archaeology Department declared it a 'protected monument' in 1999. In 2016, the heritage museum at the over 400-year-old structure was opened to public.

Asokan digs for control over Hadiya again: Presents new conspiracy theory in court

Hadiya Case
Changing his version of events till now, Asokan now claims Hadiya was influenced by a Muslim brother-sister duo.
In the latest development in the sensational Hadiya case, Asokan -  the father of the 26-year-old woman from Kerala - has told the Supreme Court that he does not object to his daughter's change in faith. Changing his narrative completely, Asokan now claims that Hadiya was ‘indoctrinated’ by a Muslim brother-sister duo to convert to Islam. Asokan had said in earlier affidavits that Hadiya was influenced by Faseena and Jaseena, two of her classmates at the Sivaraj college in Salem and their father had got her inducted for conversion. However, now Asokan says that "the real narrative of his daughter embracing Islam" is different. He has said that he came to know the ‘truth’ about this through Hadiya's close friend Ambiliy, recently.  According to Asokan, Hadiya came in contact with one Shanib from Malappuram through an internet chat in 2015. Shanib in turn introduced Hadiya (then Akhila) to his elder sister Sherin Shahana who was already married to Fasil Musthafa. "Fasil Musthafa offered two things to my daughter, the post of his second wife and a trip to Yemen. The said couple took my daughter to Ernakulam and got an affidavit sworn before Sri. Davy AC, Advocate and Notary, Lawyers Line, 2nd Floor, Infant Jesus Building, Cochin-31 on 10/09/2015 to the purported effect that she had become a Muslim. She was renamed ‘Aasiya’ from several names suggested by the said couple," Asokan said in the affidavit.  He said that after Hadiya confided in her friend Ambily, who objected to her becoming Fasil's second wife, she "withdrew from the marriage proposal in the back drop of the propaganda that girls are being converted to Islam and getting trafficked to foreign countries." Following this, the couple dropped their idea of taking Hadiya to Yemen, Asokan said.  He added: "My daughter, who was already vulnerable fell into the trap of Faseena and Jaseena, sisters and workers of Campus Front (Student wing of Popular Front of India) and brought her to their father Sri. Aboobacker who in turn gave my daughter to 7th (Sathyasarani) and 8th respondents (Sainaba)." Hadiya a vulnerable adult  Despite the Supreme Court repeatedly saying that Hadiya is an adult who is entitled to take her own decision, Asokan seems obstinate in proving that she is a vulnerable adult and incapable of taking decisions. He stated that Hadiya had asked for Sainaba to be appointed her guardian when Asokan first approached the court, and this proved his daughter’s vulnerability. "It is submitted that the case of my daughter that she had chosen the 8th Respondent as her guardian establishes my case that she is extremely vulnerable not behaving like a mature independent adult," the affidavit reads.  He has also argued that Hadiya repeatedly asked the SC to appoint Shafin Jahan her guardian. Hadiya’s constant need for a guardian despite being an educated adult goes to show her extreme vulnerability, Asokan argued in the affidavit. "These are signs not of an independent and educated women, who is standing on her own feet and does not need to be dependent on anybody else. There is no doubt that Akhila is a vulnerable adult and therefore the High Court’s protective orders in the aforesaid petition acting, inter alia, under its inherent jurisdiction was justified and warranted in the peculiar circumstances of this case," the affidavit reads.  Denies allegations of harassment  In her affidavit to the SC, Hadiya had alleged torture at the hands of her parents in their home in Vaikkom of Kottayam district, and alleged that she caught her mother mixing drugs in her food.  Denying those allegations, Asokan said that his wife "cannot even dream of causing any harm to my daughter." "No one who visited my daughter advised her to leave Islam but advised her to shed her animosity towards my wife and myself as whatever we had done was only for her welfare. Everybody advised her that Islam does not teach that a new comer should treat his/her parents as persons to be hated," he maintained.  In the counter affidavit, Asokan has raised the case of Yasmeen Mohammad Zahid, who was arrested by the NIA in 2016, while she was trying to flee India to Kabul in Afghanistan, along with her minor child. She is the second wife of Abdul Rashid, believed to be the main conspirator in the missing case of 21 people from Kerala to join the ISIS. "She (Yasmeen) too, was going under the pretext of marriage. She told the interrogators that she had got married to Abdul Rashid (the main conspirator) over the phone and the co-accused Shihas acted as the 'wali' (guardian) of the bride, while other co-accused Ashfak and Yahya acted as witnesses. Abdul Rashid also used to send her videos and messages of the ‘Caliphate’ using the ‘Telegram’ App," the affidavit reads.  The SC bench that heard the case on February 22, has posted the case for further hearing on March 8.

Chengannur bye-election the first test for BJP in its 'Mission Kerala'

Chengannur has traditionally been a safe seat for the Congress, and the constituency has, for close to three decades, been won by the Congress-led UDF.
By Sanu George For BJP President Amit Shah, who has set his eyes on winning Kerala, the first test will come when a bye-election to the Chengannur Assembly constituency is held in the not-too-distant future. After spreading the party's tentacles with a resounding victory in the northeast, Shah has set the organisation on the road to securing power in Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal, saying the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) "golden period" will come only when it has won these states. And for Shah, the first test in Kerala of achieving what currently appears to be a "distant dream" could be the soon-to-be-announced Chengannur Assembly bye-election following the sudden demise of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator KK Ramachandran Nair in January. While the BJP ruling Kerala looks almost an impossibility in the present scheme of things, the saying that "politics is the art of the possible" could well be the motivating factor for Shah and his think tank. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP contested 18 out of the 20 parliamentary seats in the state and secured 10.33 per cent of the votes. And it was only in the 2016 Assembly elections that the "Lotus" (the party symbol) bloomed for the first time in the state when party veteran O Rajagopal won the Nemom assembly seat in the state capital. In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP and its allies contested all 140 seats in the state and secured 15.2 per cent votes. The BJP itself contested 98 seats and received 10.6 per cent of the votes. The BJP had an alliance with the fledgling Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), the political arm of the SNDP, an organisation that works predominantly for the backward Ezhavas. The debutant party secured 4.47 per cent votes in the state, contesting 36 seats in alliance with BJP. Apart from the BDJS, the other BJP allies in the state were the Kerala Congress (Thomas), the Janadhipathya Rashtriya Sabha and the Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithi (Rajan Babu). Chengannur has traditionally been a safe seat for the Congress, and the constituency has, for close to three decades, been won by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). But in the 2016 Assembly polls, Congress candidate PC Vishnunath, seeking a hat-trick of wins from the seat, had to bite the dust. One reason attributed for his defeat was the giant strides made by the BJP candidate, P Sreedharan Pillai, a former state BJP president, who secured 42,682 votes. The CPI (M)'s Nair won the 2016 election with 52,880 votes and Vishnunath came second with 44,987 votes. Even though the dates are yet to be announced for the upcoming bye-election, it is certainly going to be one of the most keenly-contested electoral contests in the history of the state. More importantly, for the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of Pinarayi Vijayan, it will be an opportunity to test whether there is any anti-incumbency feeling against it, though it has been in power for just 21 months. For the Congress, which received a drubbing in the 2016 polls, the contest will reveal whether it is on the path of recovery before next year's Lok Sabha elections. For the BJP, a victory in Chengannur will give a much-needed boost to Shah's dream of ruling Kerala in the not-too-distant future. In the bi-polar politics of Kerala, the CPI (M)-led Left Front polled over 43 per cent votes in the 2016 Assembly elections, while the Congress-led UDF polled over 38 per cent votes. The Kannur police arrested Vijesh, a 32-year-old man, who claims to be an RSS worker.
The Kannur town police arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly issuing a death threat over the phone to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The accused is identified as Vijesh, who claims to a hardcore RSS worker. According to police officials, Vijesh made a call to the CPI (M) district office in Kannur on Sunday and allegedly issued a death threat against the CM. “He says he is an ardent follower of the RSS. He made a phone call on Sunday to the CPI (M) district office in Kannur. CPI (M) Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan received the call and Vijesh then issued a death threat against the CM,” said Sreejith Koderi, SI, Kannur Town Police. Police officials also said that Vijesh allegedly made the death threat in the excitement of learning about BJP’s sweeping victory in Tripura. “He has admitted to the police officials that he made the call after he watched the results of Tripura Assembly Polls. An ardent follower of RSS, Vijesh was excited by the BJP’s sweeping victory and in a frenzy made a threat call against the CM,” said Sreejith Koderi. The police officials after receiving the information from the Kannur CPI (M) district office was on the lookout for Vijesh since Sunday. The officials finally nabbed him on Monday evening at Kasaragod railway station. “We nabbed him on Monday from the Kasaragod railway station and he is now under our custody. He will be produced in the court today,” added the police officer. The police have registered a case against Vijesh under IPC Section 506 (1) (criminal intimidation) and under IT Act. Many such instances have been reported earlier. In December 2017, an anonymous person made a similar call issuing death threat against the CM. The Thrissur Town East Police had registered a case then and traced the phone call to Palakkad. In another instance a youth was arrested in April 2017 for issuing a death threat in a Facebook post that he shared. The accused was identified as Akhil Krishanan, a 22-year-old, who is suspected to be a BJP activist.
