According to reports, the police suspect that Peethambaran had planned the murder for political vendetta.
Peethambaran A, a local CPI (M) leader in Kasaragod has been arrested by the investigation team probing the murder of two Youth Congress workers in Periya, district police chief A Srinivas told TNM. The arrest was made on Tuesday evening. Police had taken Peethambaran in custody on Monday night. He will be presented before the magistrate on Wednesday. Two Youth Congress workers, Kripesh (22) and Sharath Lal (24) had been slayed by three men who came in motorcycles on -----. While Kripesh died in Kasaragod district hospital, Sharath  had succumbed to injuries on the way to a medical facility in Mangaluru in Karnataka. According to reports, the police suspect that Peethambaran had planned the murder for political vendetta. Though the police are silent on the exact motive, sources say that Kripesh and Sharath  were involved in a skirmish with Peethambaran earlier. It is after a day long interrogation that the police arrested Peethambaran on Tuesday evening, A Srinivas told TNM. Meanwhile, there are reports that Peethambaran, a local committee member, has been ousted from CPI(M). The decision to oust the local leader was taken after a meeting held by party’s state committee. CPI (M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had earlier said that nobody will be protected if it is proven that they had a hand in the crime. He had also said that the party has no role in the crime which happened in Periya. “The party does not agree to killing people in the name of politics. CPI (M) is a party which has lost many members because of this. Those who have connection with the crime will not be protected under any cost,” Kodiyeri told the media, hours before the arrest was confirmed.  It is also reported that police had seized the vehicle which the culprits had used. According to media reports, vehicle numbered KL-14 J 5683 has been taken into custody. Earlier on Tuesday, Kerala High Court had said that politics which result in violence is not suitable for a civilised society. Skirmishes between supporters and police were reported from many places on Monday. Youth Congress demonstrators repeatedly stoned state owned buses and forcibly closed down shops in some areas. The alleged motive According to sources, last month, a scuffle between the local CPI(M) and the KSU activists of Munnad People’s College, a self-financing institution, is what sparked the violence that took Sharath’s and Kripesh’s lives. After the attack on KSU workers, a few Youth Congress members had halted a bus in Periya and threatened the staff, stoking the tensions further. This later led to clashes between DYFI workers (the youth wing of the CPM) and Youth Congress workers in Kalyott, a Congress stronghold where the college is located. During this scuffle, Peethambaran, a local committee member of DYFI, injured his hand and Sharath was named as the accused number 1 in the case and was remanded. Sharath and Peethambaran were also members of the same local temple committee which then summoned the duo to talk and iron out their differences. However, this effort turned futile and led to both parties giving each other death threats.

Controversy
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation razed 8-10 protest tents overnight, along the 100 metre stretch on MG road in front if the Secretariat.
In an overnight move, the Thiruvananthapuram city corporation has cleared a dozen protest tents in front of the Secretariat, to make space for pilgrims attending the Attukal Pongala on Wednesday. At around 11:30 pm on Monday night, around 100 people including city corporation workers, health inspectors and the police removed the tents manually and cleaned the area using a water lorry. The corporation maintains that it was done to facilitate devotees coming to attend the Attukal Pongala - one of Kerala’s biggest festivals with 4 - 5 lakh women coming to the capital every year.  “We are not against protestors sitting outside the Secretariat. We just need it to be cleared for tomorrow as pilgrims will be using up every bit of the space during tomorrow’s festival. After this, we have no problem with them reinstalling their tent in the same,” a source within the Mayor’s office told TNM.  At any given point, the 100 metres stretch of footpath on MG Road outside the secretariat is filled with protesting people. This is the first time that their sheds are being cleared.  “Earlier we never used to have so many tents or people protesting. People would come protest and go back. Now, it is like these protestors are residing inside the tents which are fully covered with tarpaulins on four sides. The tents make tiny houses” the source added. Among things retrieved from the sheds were gas stove, food supplies, bedding, mats, utensils and other essential household items. Officials who were engaged in removing the tents also spotted alcohol bottles inside several of them.  “We removed flex boards with hands and carried trucks full of sand and dirt from the site. From what we saw, it looked like the protestors were even going to the loo right outside the tents, on the road/ Many tents were even empty” the source added.  Among the protestors who raised their voices against this sudden clearing was Sreejith, the man who has been sitting in front of the Chief Minister’s Office for the last two years to get justice for his brother, who passed away in police custody in 2014.  Other protestors too had tried to resist the corporation, the source recalls.  Corporation officials also said that the Kerala High Court had issues a directive to clear any tents in front of the Secretariat. it is both a civic and a security issue, as the Secretariat is an important location in the heart of the city.  Although police officers were involved in clearing out the tents, officials from Cantonment Station, which covers the Secretariat area, denied having removed tents from the pavement. "The corporation was responsible for it and did it because of the Attikal Pongala slated to take place on Wednesday. We did not help them," an official from Cantonment police told TNM.

Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala had met the Governor and briefed him on the case.
Kerala Governor (Retd) Justice P. Sathasivam on Tuesday sought an urgent status report from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the police investigation into the murder of two Youth Congress workers near Periya in Kasaragod on Sunday night, said a release from the Governor's office. Earlier in the day, senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Ramesh Chennithala had met the Governor and briefed him on the case. Chennithala had also informed the Governor that the post of Additional Director General of Police, North, had been lying vacant for the past six-eight months and hence the monitoring of law and order in Kasargod district had been affected."It was in this context that the Governor sought an urgent report from the Chief Minister," said the release from the Governor's office. Youth Congress workers Kripesh (22) and Sharath Lal (24) were attacked by three motorcycle-borne men while returning from an event on Sunday night. While Kripesh died at the Kasargod district hospital, Sharath succumbed to his injuries on his way to a medical facility in Mangaluru, Karnataka. State Congress President Mullapally Ramachandran said, "If the Narendra Modi-Amit Shah team is finishing off its political rivals at the Centre, the Pinarayi Vijayan-Kodiyeri Balakrishnan team {state CPI (M) Secretary} is doing the same in Kerala.""We demand the arrest of the real culprits as the CPI (M) has the practice of providing dummy accused in political murder cases," he added. The Congress party plans to hold condolence meetings across the state on Wednesday evening to protest the two murders. Meanwhile, the CPI (M) has gone on the defensive after A. Peethambaran, a prominent local CPI (M) leader, was arrested by the investigation team. Peethambaran, who is alleged to have plotted the two murders, was reportedly dismissed from the party on Monday."None will be spared who have been part of the crime. Our party will not give protection to culprits. We demand strict action against all those who have done this crime," said CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Breaking his silence on the murders for the first time, CM Pinarayi Vijayan who met the media in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, said that it had almost become a habit for the state Congress to blame every murder in the state on the chief minister."As soon as the news of the crime came, we instructed senior police officials to ensure that no one is spared and everyone who has a role in this is brought to justice," said Pinarayi.

Muthanga agitation: 16 yrs on, Wayanad tribals continue to fight for promised land

Muthanga Agitation
When Kerala government failed to give one-acre land to the Adivasis, around 617 families set up their tents in Muthanga forest as a sign of protest, marking the beginning of the agitation.
On February 19, 2003, sounds of gunshots echoed through the forest of Muthanga in the Wayanad district of Kerala as the area witnessed men in uniform setting fire to the tents and huts set up by the Adivasis, who were fighting for the land that was promised to them by the State Government. Today, 16 years later, life hasn’t changed much for many of these tribal families, who took part in the agitation in 2003. Living in various colonies in Wayanad, these tribal families still live in the dream of receiving that one-acre land promised to each family. “If we get our promised land, we will grow coffee and pepper and live without depending on the forests and others for our livelihood,” says 38-year-old Ravi, leader of the Thiruvannur Adivasi colony near Sulthan Bathery. The Thiruvannur colony, which is a part of the Noolpuzha Grama Panchayat, is one among the many tribal colonies in Wayanad that is still reeling from the ghosts of the 2003 agitation. Since then, the tribals of Wayanad get together in Muthanga on February 19, every year, to pay tribute to Jogi, an Adivasi who died during clashes with the police. Thiruvannur colony. When promised land became just a promise Nestled amidst the silence and the towering trees, inside a forest, near the Mananthavady area of Wayanad district, it wasn’t an easy task to reach the house of CK Janu, one of the leaders of the Muthanga agitation and leader of the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha (AGMS). With two plastic chairs placed on the veranda of her single-storeyed house, Janu doesn’t waste any time with small talk as she starts recapping the infamous Muthanga Adivasi agitation. The Muthanga agitation in 2003 can be said to be one of the landmark protests in the history of the tribal communities in the country in their fight to obtain cultivable land. “It all began in 2001 after 30 tribals died of starvation. Following their deaths, thousands of tribals, led by the AGMS, took to a kudil kettal samaram (protest tents) outside the Chief Minister’s office in Thiruvananthapuram,” Janu tells TNM. Police action against Adivasis, who were protesting in Muthanga on Feb 19,2003.  In 1975, the Kerala Government had passed a law promising to give cultivable land to all the tribals in the state. But despite this law, the successive governments in the state failed to keep up with their promise. “The kudil kettal samaram in Thiruvananthapuram went on for close to 50 days until the government assured them that it will distribute land between one-acre and five-acres to all the Adivasis in the state,” Janu recalled. The government kept its promise for one year, after which, according to Janu, they started to go back on their word. It was the United Democratic Front (UDF) government under Chief Minister AK Antony who was in power at that time. In 2003, following inaction by the government, hundreds of tribals from various colonies in Wayanad entered the Muthanga forest region near the Karnataka border and set up their tents there and began cultivating in the land as a statement of protest against the Kerala government. “Around 617 families had set up their tents in Muthanga and this means, there were close to 1,000 Adivasis, including children, in the agitation,” said Janu. “We wanted the protest to be peaceful,” she says. “We knew there would be arrests and we came prepared for that. But none of us expected it to turn out the way it did,” she added. On February 19, 2003, the state had sent the police force to evacuate the Adivasis from the region. “Instead of engaging in any forms of negotiation with the Adivasis, the police resorted to violence and forced to drive the Adivasis away from Muthanga,” recalls Janu. Janu remembers that when the police set the tents on fire, the children who were witness to all this, felt terrified and began crying. “The mothers, who went to pick up their children, were also beaten up by the police,” she recalled in pain. That day Janu was arrested by the police, along with K Geethanandan, who was one of the coordinators of the agitation. Janu states that both she and Geethanandan were tortured in police custody, just like many of the Adivasis who were arrested that day. CK Janu being arrested during the Muthanga agitation. According to Janu, the agitation in Muthanga gave the Adivasis the courage to fight for their rights. “It was following this agitation, that the whole concept of ‘bhoomi samaram’ (protesting for land) was formed, where Adivasis would enter the land, set up tents and start cultivating as a sign of protest,” Janu tells TNM. But the scars that were left following the agitation still remains in Wayanad. It was not just Jogi who died during the clashes. A policeman, named Vinod had also died that day. Jogi's memorial in Muthanga.  16 years on and no development yet In the last 16 years, only 283 families, out of the 617 that took part in the agitation, have received the one-acre land each. According to Janu, the government cited the lack of availability of land as the reason for the delay. “But this is not true,” she added. Among the families who have not received their deserving land are the Paniyar tribes of the Thiruvannur colony, from where all the families had participated in the agitation. It is the men of this colony that go out to work as daily wage labourers while the women stay back at their homes and take care of the household chores. Ravi, who was also the part of the Muthanga protest, is agitated as he speaks to TNM about the delay in allocating the land. “It’s been 16 years. Every time we approach the officials, they keep telling us that we will get our land in the Irulam village in the Pulpally town in Wayanad. But it has been years and we haven’t seen any developments yet,” said Ravi. Ravi. The colony has a total of 42 families and in many of the families, there is at least one person who was arrested and harassed by the police following the agitation. “Our life is anyway coming to an end. But we are fighting for our future generation, which should flourish on the land that was promised to us,” said 50-year-old Karuppan. “There is no space for the future generation to live here,” he reminded. Karuppan (right).  Chathi, a 69-year-old woman who was observing the men all this while, interrupted and told TNM that they have been dreaming of getting the land for many years now. “If we get our own land, our men don’t have to go deep inside the forest to get honey or cardamom or tea. We can cultivate all of that on our own land. We can also cultivate our daily food from our land. But what is the use of dreaming all of this if we are not getting the land?” she asks. The members of the Paniyar tribe in the colony have expressed their displeasure at all the political parties. According to these tribal members, several political parties have ignored them during the agitation and even now. “During the agitation, all the political parties were against us and even now, no one comes to us, except for votes,” says an outraged Ravi. ‘Will give land in phased manner’ According to Vani Das, the Project Officer of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) in Kalpetta, the State Government is giving lands to the Adivasis in various phases and only the first phase has been completed till now, during which 287 families were given one-acre land. “The Government has kept aside land in various vested forest regions, but these forest regions have to be cleared of all the dense vegetation and made sure that there are water and other facilities before handing over the land. That is why there is so much of delay,” Vani Das told TNM. The Project Officer also stated that it was not just the families that took part in the agitation that are landless. “The total Adivasi population in Wayanad comes up to around 1,53,000 belonging to around 36,100 families. Out of this, there are more than 8,000 homeless families. We have to give them land also, so the question of land availability also arises here,” said Vani Das. He, however, emphasised that the Kerala government and the ITDP are working together to come up with various benefit schemes that include the Adivasis of Wayanad.

The CBI can now approach the Kerala High Court to decide which court should consider the supplementary charge sheet in the case.
In what comes as a blow to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the murder case of Ariyil Abdul Shukoor, the Thalassery additional district sessions court on Tuesday returned the supplementary charge sheet submitted by the CBI. According to a report by the Times of India (ToI), the CBI had submitted a plea to shift the case to the designated CBI special court in Kochi, which the court rejected. As per a report by Manorama News, the CBI can approach the Kerala High Court to decide which court should consider the supplementary charge sheet. But the sessions court did not give CBI time to approach the High Court. According to reports, the court also decided not to consider the discharge petition of six accused in the case. This includes CPI (M) district secretary P Jayarajan and MLA TV Rajesh, who can move the petition in the court, which would consider the case. The additional sessions judge, T Indira, according to a report by ToI, said the court did not have the jurisdiction to accept the charge sheet as the CBI court is outside the district. The court is also reported to have observed that since it does not have the jurisdiction, the plea for shifting the court could not be considered. 22-year-old Abdul Shukoor was killed near Thaliparamba in Kannur district- a fortress of the CPI (M)- on February 20, 2012. According to the police charge sheet, Shukoor was murdered in a vendetta killing because he was involved in blocking and attacking a vehicle in which Jayarajan and Rajesh had travelled. The murder happened within hours after the vehicle was attacked. Jayarajan was arrested in August 2012 in connection with the murder and was remanded for 14 days. The arrest had led to protests by CPI (M) activists. The arrest happened after Jayarajan was interrogated for the third time. Jajarajan and Rajesh had been slapped with section 118 for concealing design to commit offences punishable with death or life imprisonment. The CBI in its charge sheet has also said that both the leaders did not try to prevent the killing of Shukoor despite getting information on the conspiracy.

Relief after many years: HC orders recovery of Preetha Shaji’s land

Court
The court order declares the auction sale of the property void and asked Preetha to pay money to the bank to get back the land worth Rs 2 crore.
Preetha and Shaji, the Ernakulam-based couple who had gone through a lot in the last 25 years in the name of a property they had pledged at a bank as guarantee, are finally relieved. The Kerala High Court has ordered that the property sold in an auction sale be recovered back and the couple pay an amount of Rs 43.5 lakh (4351362.85) to the bank within a month (by March 15), and an amount of Rs 1,89,000 to the party that purchased it.  The couple have been protesting with the support of activists and members of the Anti-Sarfaesi People’s Movement for 600 days, to avoid the takeover of the 18 and a half cents of land they had and their eviction from the house, that had been attached by the bank. The land worth Rs 2 crore was sold in auction by the bank for Rs 37 lakh to a man called Ratheesh. The High Court has in its order declared this sale as void citing a period of more than three years having passed between the date of the recovery certificate (2009) and the sale (2014). “I am happy about the verdict. We will somehow raise the amount to be paid to the bank and the auction purchaser and get our property back,” Preetha tells TNM. “We have gone through too much just for standing surety for a relative to get a loan of Rs 2 lakh from a bank. In the 25 years that passed, the education of my kids suffered, our family situation deteriorated, and my mother passed away, unable to bear the pain we went through. Those who supported us also suffered when 14 of them were remanded in custody for 22 days,” she says. It is in 1994 that Sajan, a relative of the family, took a loan from the Lord Krishna Bank and Shaji had acted as surety, providing his property document as proof. But when Sajan didn’t return the loan, the couple landed in trouble. Shaji sold four cents of his land and paid half the loan amount – Rs 1 lakh – back. But the remaining amount kept piling up with interest in the years that passed. The Lord Krishna Bank merged with the Centurion Bank and later with the HDFC Bank. The amount swelled to Rs 20 lakh in 2005. But it is in 2014 that the auction sale happened and Ratheesh bought the property. Preethi has earlier told TNM that they were not even informed of the sale. Also read: Forced eviction of a Kerala couple by bank rekindles fight against Sarfaesi Act “The problem here is that the reason of making the sale void is because of three years having elapsed (in between the recovery certificate date and sale). But look at the interest that the bank had asked for, how quickly the original amount was piling up to several lakhs. The debtors (or in this case, guarantors) would not be able to return it. And since civil courts could not be approached in such cases, one is forced to go to the District Recovery Tribunal,” says Manuel, activist and office bearer of the Anti-Sarfaesi People’s Movement. The DRTs were established under the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act (RDDBFI Act), 1993, to facilitate the recovery of debts due to banks and financial institutions. Manuel and others believe that the DRT and the Sarfaesi Act are not going to help people like Preetha and Shaji. Preetha’s case had also rekindled the debate around the controversial Sarfaesi Act - Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act. Political parties should also do more than just visit the venue of protest and make empty promises, Manuel says. “Because we need more permanent solutions. As of now though, we could call this court order a people’s victory.”

Fire
As per the primary reports from fire and rescue officials, no casualties have been reported so far.
A fire broke out at the six-storeyed building of Paragon footwear godown at Chittoor road in Kochi, sending plumes of smoke into the air. The godown caught fire by 11.30 am on Wednesday. As per the primary reports from fire and rescue officials, no persons have been injured in the incident. The fire and rescue officials are finding it challenging to put out the fire, which broke out in the heart of the city. The building is located in Kalthiparambil road near Ernakulam South Railway station. Though the fire has not been spread to nearby buildings, the fire and rescue officials say there are chances that the fire might spread if it not doused soon. The fire is so massive that the smoke being emitted into the sky can be seen from across in the city. The aluminium sheets, which covered three levels of the building, as well as rubber raw materials in the godown have apparently proven a challenge to the fire and rescue personnel to douse the fire. "All 28 employees got out at the right time. There was a slight delay in the fire force reaching the spot," he said.  All agencies in the district that are well-equipped to handle fire and rescue situations have been called for help. According to reports, more rescue vehicles from other districts have been called to the area. Panic has gripped Kochi as the location is crowded with many buildings, including residential flats and other commercial buildings. The officials are at the top of a residential flat, near the Paragon footwear godown building. The residents of the flat nearby have been asked to move out of the area. District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla has reached the spot and is currently monitoring the rescue works. The bystanders gathered at the spot have been evacuated from the spot. According to media reports, residents are also facing breathing difficulties in the areas. This is a developing story

Happy to end it this way: Actor Divya speaks to TNM on Alencier's 'Me Too' apology

Me Too
Speaking to TNM, Divya says that she had spoken up about Alencier after she heard of similar behaviour with other actors.
Actor Divya Gopinath, who accused her colleague Alencier of sexual harassment, has finally found some closure. It was in October last year that Divya had come out with an emotional Facebook video after the blog she had written anonymously before that was questioned and ridiculed. "When a woman decides to share her experience, and without naming herself, it is sad that people come forward to abuse her and call her a fraud,” she had said in the video. In the blog, Divya had mentioned several instances of Alencier sexually harassing her in the sets of Aabhaasam in which they both had acted.  Speaking to TNM, Divya says, “Even before I put out the video, he had apologised to me personally for his behaviour. But after that, I heard about him misbehaving with other artistes in other film sets. That’s when I decided to come out about the incident." It took him four months and a newspaper article, but Alencier finally publicly apologised to Divya, and all the other actors who were hurt by his behaviour. He made his public apology through Kochi Times, the same paper where Divya had, a day before, asked for one, four months after naming him as part of Me Too. Alencier said to Times of India, “After Divya’s interview was published, I spoke to her. Our conversation was a friendly one and she reiterated that she needs a public apology and only that would bring closure to the controversy. I too felt I need to do this. Divya asked for the apology through Kochi Times. Hence, I am apologising publicly in this space." Divya says that she is happy that it could end in this way.  “He made the public apology through the paper. He had called me too when my interview with the paper, asking for the apology, came out. I had wanted a video of his apology, but this is fine, now that he has spoken to the paper,” she says. She wants to thank all those who had been with her through the ordeal – the Women in Cinema Collective, Justice Hema (who heads the Justice Hema Commission) and others. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), to which Divya made a complaint four months ago, had told her that they haven’t received the same.  “About a week ago, I met Mohanlal sir (who is the president of AMMA) and he said he would speak to Alencier,” Divya says. But in his interview to TOI, Alencier says he had not heard from AMMA about the incident. Alencier had become a quick favourite of Malayalam movie-goers ever since his brilliant performances in films directed by Rajeev Ravi, Dileesh Pothen and others. He had also been an activist, reacting to social issues in his own unique ways, protesting with street plays and performances. So, Kerala was shocked to hear of such behaviour coming from an artiste and person like him. Divya who was seen in a prominent role in the critically acclaimed film Ayaal Sassi and later in Aabhaasam, is now acting in Aashiq Abu’s Virus, as a hospital staff. She is also a theatre actor, and was seen playing the title character in Chandradasan’s Shakuntalam during the International Theatre Festival of Kerala. Pulijanmam, another play – directed by Bineesh K - for which she was project designer, has been nominated for the prestigious META Awards.

Protest
Diniya was going through a tough time lately due to the demise of her husband and the loss of job.
News 18 Kerala
The protest being carried out by thousands of empanelled workers of Kerala Road Transport Corporation (RTC) outside the secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram since January 21, culminated in the suicide attempt of an Alappuzha native on Tuesday. Diniya, an empanelled conductor of Kerala RTC, attempted to kill herself on Tuesday morning by climbing on top of a tree outside the secretariat premises. Fire and Rescue officials reached the spot and rescued Diniya after much drama. Diniya, who had been working in Alappuzha depot for the past 11 years, was terminated from her job after the Kerala High Court order of December 2018 led to the retrenchment of empanelled workers. Following this order, empanelled conductors and daily wage workers were told to leave their jobs from all Kerala RTC depots. According to the officials of Fire and Rescue department, Diniya relented after much coaxing. “When we came there, she was standing with a cloth ready to hang herself from the tree. Initially, she was not cooperating with us. Fire and rescue officials and even the fellow protestors requested her to come down from the tree but she did not listen. When we understood that she won’t budge, two of the rescue personnel climbed the tree and made her come down,” said Suresh Kumar, an official with the Fire and Rescue team. Diniya had reached the protest area by 7 in the morning on Tuesday. According to Jayaprakash, one of the empanelled conductors, nobody noticed her climbing the tree. “When we noticed her sitting on top of the tree with her dupatta tied around her neck, we called Fire and Rescue officials. They reached the spot and rescued her by around 8.45am,” Jayaprakash told TNM. She was taken to a nearby government hospital after the rescue.  According to other protesters, Diniya was in a depressed state for the past few months because of the sudden death of her husband six months back.“On the way to the hospital, Diniya expressed how miserable her life was. With the demise of her husband, loss of job and two children to look after, she was going through a very hard time and was desperately in need of a job,” Suresh Kumar said. After being discharged from hospital, Diniya came straight back to the protest site.  On Monday night, the protestors’ tent was demolished by the corporation officials as part of Attukal Pongala arrangements. Thampanoor police have registered a case against Diniya under IPC section 309, for attempting suicide. The empanelled staff have decided to continue the protest in front of the secretariat till the government gives them an acceptable solution. “Even when an incident like this has occurred in front of the secretariat, none of the officials have shown the basic morality of enquiring about this. We also got information from sources that this issue was not even discussed in the cabinet meeting held recently. This shows that the government is least interested in solving our woes,” added Jayaprakash, who has been a conductor in Kerala RTC for the past 14 years.

The veteran actor, who had a near fatal accident seven years ago, is now ready to act in a commercial.

Except as a rare smiling face who came on television for a special occasion, Jagathy Sreekumar, the actor who made generations laugh and cry, has been mostly absent from the world he was most happy in – the one in front of the camera. On Tuesday, his son Rajkumar announced that this was going to change, and that after seven years, his papa was going to face the camera again for a commercial. “My brother is launching our own production company – called Jagathy Sreekumar Entertainments. Papa’s comeback to the camera is also part of that. The ad is a production of Silverstorm Water Theme Park,” Parvathy Shone, Jagathy’s daughter, tells TNM. Everything changed for Jagathy on the night of March 10, 2012, when the car he was travelling in met with a near fatal accident near Calicut University. Even as everyone fond of the veteran comedian feared the worst, the actor has been slowly recuperating, living his life inside the walls of his Thiruvananthapuram home, cared for by the family.  “We are all joining him in the ad, his grandchildren will also be there,” Parvathy says. Acting offers had come in the intervening years, but the family was afraid he was not ready. But now, the doctor has advised that working in front of the camera and meeting his old colleagues might uplift his spirits and influence his treatment. “He has been showing some visible changes on interacting with the friends he has worked with for decades. So, we, as his children, are providing the platform for papa to make his comeback,” Parvathy says. She knows that he is not the same old Jagathy, his right hand is still slightly paralysed, he is still on a wheelchair and has trouble with his speech. And Jagathy is known for his unique style of rendering his lines, expressions and body language most beautifully befitting comedy. But acting is not just speaking, Parvathy reminds you. “Let’s see. We are just as eager to watch him do what he loved most," she notes. The shooting will happen in Athirappally on February 28, after a switch on function the previous day, at the Silverstorm Water Theme Park. The ad will be launched in Thiruvananthapuram in an event attended by Jagathy’s friends from the cinema industy.  Also read: Happy to end it this way: Actor Divya speaks to TNM on Alencier's 'Me Too' apology

Hearths, pots, Pongala: Thousands of women join annual Attukal Pongala fest in T’puram

Attukal Pongala
As part of 10-day Attukal Pongala temple festival, women come from across the state to prepare Pongala, made of rice, jaggery, coconut and ghee, and offer it to the temple goddess.
It was that time of the year in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram when the Statue road near the Kerala Secretariat was a hive of activities. On Wednesday, hundreds of women were crouched on the pavements on the Statue road; not for protests, but to celebrate the annual Attukal Pongala festival, one of the largest religious gatherings of women. Droves of women from across the state lined the main roads and pavements, armed with makeshift hearths, bricks, mud pots and ladles. The Attukal Pongala is a 10-day festival celebrated at the Attukal temple in Thiruvananthapuram. On the ninth day, women gather to prepare Pongala, a dish made of rice, jaggery, coconut and ghee, in earthen pots and offer it to the goddess of the temple - Attukal Bhagavathy. Although the festival began on Wednesday, preparations kicked off the previous day, like every year - women devotees start arriving to claim their spots on the roadsides, loudspeakers are set-up to play music and other entertainment programmes.   An official from the Attukal temple told TNM that almost 40 lakh women devotees are expected to participate in the festival today. However, TNM could not get a confirmation about the exact number. Despite the scorching heat in Thiruvananthapuram, the women who gathered for the festival continued preparing various dishes with a smile. “Attukal Pongala is a festival which we look forward to. We have been attending the festival for the last several years. So, we can easily ignore this heat,” says 49-year-old Vasantha, as she blows the fire under the hearth. Women also use the makeshift, open-air kitchen to prepare other dishes, in addition to Pongala. Ullasini from Palakkad churned out one dish after the other. “Manda Puttu is made with rice, coconut, jaggery and cardamom powder and rolled into small balls. Then there is Therali Appam, a dish steamed in vayana leaves (bay leaves). Payasam made of jaggery is yet another common dish,” said the 52-year-old. As part of the festival arrangements, the city police also put in place strict traffic regulations in the city since Tuesday evening and is expected to continue till 8 pm on Wednesday. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also been conducting special bus services from all major areas in the city for the convenience of the devotees.

While Peethambaran’s wife says that he couldn’t have plotted the crime without the party’s knowledge, CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri has denied it.
Peethambaran (Left) Kripesh and Sharath (Right).
In a major development in the Kasargode double murder case that could prove damaging to the ruling CPI (M) in Kerala, the wife of local CPI (M) leader Peethambaran who was arrested in the case, said that he couldn’t have planned it without the knowledge of the party. This is in sharp contrast to CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan‘s statement on the crime. Kodiyeri on Tuesday told media that the murder had been executed without the knowledge of the party. Peethambaran’s wife Manju and their daughter Devika told media from their house in Periya in the district that Peethambaran couldn’t have done it without the knowledge of the party at any cost. “He won’t do it without party’s knowledge at any cost. But after the arrest, no one from the party came here. They had come to meet him when he got injured,” Manju said. “He has done it for the party, but now the party is disowning him. If it has tainted the party’s image, it would affect them and the elections are coming. The blame is on the entire party, but now they are putting the blame on one person. For my part, I would say all the blame is on the party,” Devika said. “Now the party thinks that we have left our place of residence, but where can we go. They should also think about that no? “ Manju asks. In a rare move, the CPI (M) had expelled Peethambaran from the party following a decision taken by the party state committee. He was a member of the Periya local committee of the party. He was arrested on Tuesday evening. Kodiyeri had earlier said, ”Those who have acted against the direction of the party won’t be allowed to continue in the party, they won't have any place in the CPI (M) and the party won't support them. The official stand of the party is that such things shouldn’t happen. Whoever will act against the direction of the party won't be spared. Such people won't have any place in the party, the party won’t protect them.” "The family of Peethambaran might think on these lines, but this is not the thinking of the party. They might have said this out of the agony of him being an accused in the case," Kodiyeri reportedly said on Wednesday. Youth Congress workers, Kripesh (22) and Sharath Lal (24) were killed  by three men who came in motorcycles on Sunday. Last month, it is learnt, that a scuffle took place between the local CPI (M) and the Kerala Students' Union (students’ wing of the Congress) activists of Munnad People's College, a self-financing institution, in Kalyott. This sparked violence between the rival groups and led to clashes between DYFI workers {youth wing of the CPI (M)} and Youth Congress workers. Kalyott is a stronghold of the Congress. During the scuffle, Peethambaran got injured. Sharath was named as the prime accused in the case. Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that Peethamabaran in his statement to the investigating team, has said that he carried out the crime out of humiliation of being attacked by the Youth Congress workers and he was also upset at the party's intervention in the issue not being satisfactory. The investigating team has reportedly found weapons that were used to kill Kripesh and Sharath. They were seized during the search for materials at the spot in Kalyott where the crime took place.'It was political’: Kin of slain Youth Congress workers allege vendetta behind murders

Kochi Mayor Soumini said that the fire could have spread rapidly because the building may not have complied with norms, which Paragon officials denied.
Fire and rescue officials managed to put out the fire in the godown of Paragon footwear in Kochi after struggling for over three hours. The massive fire, which brought activity to a standstill for hours, was brought under control by 2 pm by fire and rescue officials. The building was covered outside on all six floors with aluminium sheets and had improper ventilation, which made putting out the fire a difficult task. Despite efforts, the fire could not be subdued till 2 pm. The godown caught fire around 11 am on Wednesday, which was reportedly caused due to a short circuit. It broke out in the ground floor of the six-storeyed building was first noticed by workers who came to unload items in the godown. Around 20 workers were in the building when the fire broke out, all of whom rushed out of the building as soon as they were informed. As the building is located just one kilometre away from the Ernakulam South Railway Station, chaos had ensued in the neighbourhood and neighbouring buildings. “We had no idea where this fire started. All of a sudden, we could see a part of the ground floor of the building had caught fire,” said Parvathy, a resident of Govind Apartments, a building beside the Paragon godown. About 28 families live in Govind Apartments, all of whom came out on the street when the fire broke out. “Although the apartment can accommodate 40 families, only a few people were present. The smoke was so dense that we were not able to stay inside the apartment,” Parvathy told TNM. Residents in the area said that although fire and rescue officials were swiftly informed, the fire had spread to the third floor by the time they arrived. This delay, officials said, was due to roadblock due to the ongoing construction works of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). By 12.30 pm, vehicles of all fire and rescue departments had reached the spot, but the fire continued to rage. As they were struggling to bring the situation under control, help was sought from the fire and rescue departments of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Thrissur districts. “As we received reports that it was being difficult to manage the fire from spreading to nearby areas, we asked the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in Kochi for help. It was only after they brought more advanced machines like the foam fighter were rescue workers able to control the fire,” District Collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla told TNM. According to the Deputy Collector (Disaster Management) Sheela Devi, it was the presence of a large quantity of flammable raw materials like rubber which caused the fire to spread quickly. The commodities inside the building included shoes, bags and umbrellas. Paragon officials estimated the loss to be around Rs 5 crore. Kochi Mayor Soumini Jain told mediapersons that the fire could have spread rapidly because the building may not have complied with norms, which Paragon officials denied. “This building is almost 12 years old. We had constructed this building by sticking to the norms at the time it was constructed. We have no idea why the Mayor put out a statement against us,” an official of Paragon godown told TNM. Safirulla said that whether the building complied with norms would be looked into. To avoid further untoward incidents, students of a school which was located just a few meters away from the spot were moved to another school in the city during working hours. “We could see the blaze from the school itself. There are around 1,000 students in the school including kids in kindergarten, so we decided to shift the students without waiting for any information from the officials,” said Lincy Joseph, one of the teachers.

Accident
According to witnesses, Rashid was run over by a lorry after he fell from his bike during a vehicle check.
In a tragic accident in Kerala, a 45-year old man was killed on Tuesday due to a poorly-located vehicle check in Kollam. The incident happened in Punthala Thazhathu junction - an accident-prone area, which comes under the Eravipuram Police station in the district. The road here stretches downhill, making it difficult for bikers and car drivers to see what lies ahead of them a short distance away. Despite being a risky stretch, the police here conduct vehicle checks on a daily basis, according to protesting citizens. On Tuesday, Rashid (45) fell from his bike and died after braking suddenly on noticing the vehicle check. “I was right behind him. The police waved their hands right in front of him and he braked instantly, flying off the vehicle due to the impact. From behind him, a tipper lorry ran over his head and killed him on the spot,” one of the witnesses explained in a video put up on social media. Following the incident, several people got down from their bikes and cars and surrounded the police to protest against their callousness. “You could see his brain splattered on the road. Even after this, the police, instead of calling an ambulance, were expecting us to take the body to the hospital,” the protesting man alleged. When TNM contacted the Eravipuram police station, an officer stated that the accident was just a ‘routine’ one that takes place frequently in the junction. “It was coincidental that the vehicle check too was happening in the same place at the same time,” the officer added. Contrary to protestors accounts, police added that vehicle checks on the junction do not happen frequently. “Whenever there is over speeding we go and conduct vehicle checks there. It doesn’t happen all the time as we have other duties to attend to as well,” the officers added. The deceased biker’s body was sent for post mortem to the district medical college, police added.

The funds earmarked for the two wedding receptions will be used to fund the marriage of the sister of one of the two activists who was killed.
Days after two Youth Congress activists were murdered in Kasargode, Kerala Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala has announced that his family has decided to call off the wedding reception of his son and daughter-in-law. The funds earmarked for the two wedding receptions scheduled to be held on Thursday and Sunday will be used to fund the marriage of the sister of one of the two activists who was slain. Chennithala’s son Rohit got married to Sreeja on Sunday in Kochi and a wedding reception was to be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday and another one on Sunday in Haripad.   “It is improper to conduct the receptions when the entire state mourns the death of the two youths,” Chennithala told the media on Wednesday. According to a report by the Times of India, the decision to call off the reception was taken by his son and daughter-in-law themselves. As per the report, Rohit said, “No human being can think of celebrations at such a time. When the whole state is mourning the killing of the two youths, we thought it will not be proper on our part to celebrate.” Kripesh (22) and Sarath Lal (24) were attacked and killed on Sunday night. While Kripesh died in Kasaragod district hospital, Sharath succumbed to injuries on the way to a medical facility in Mangaluru in Karnataka. Rohit said that the condition of Kripesh’s home had moved him beyond words. As per a report by News 18, Chennithala had backed their decision to cancel the reception and said that he is happy about the decision that was taken by his son and daughter-in-law. In a statement, Chennithala said that he had visited the houses of both Kripesh and Sarath Lal and he feels that both the families need help from all corners as they are not economically well off. The police on Tuesday had arrested a local CPI(M) leader in Kasargode, in connection with the murders.

The police told the court since more people were accused in the case, they required custody of Peethamabaran for questioning.
A Kerala court on Wednesday sent CPI (M) leader A. Peethamabaran, accused in the murder of two Youth Congress workers in Kasargode district on Sunday, to 7-day police custody. Before producing him before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Hosdurg, the police took Peethamabaran to the scene of the crime. It recovered two iron rods and a sword from a well, about 500-metre from the spot of murders. Youth Congress workers Kripesh, 22, and Sharath Lal, 24, were hacked to death on Sunday by three motorcycle-borne men. While Kripesh died at the Kasaragod district hospital, Sharath Lal succumbed to injuries on his way to a medical facility in Mangaluru, Karnataka. The police told the court since more people were accused in the case, they required custody of Peethamabaran for questioning. The family members of Peethamabaran told the media he was innocent. "There was plaster on my son's hand. How is it possible for him to commit the crime," asked his mother."Peethamabaran is a party worker and now the party has washed its hands off him. He has been framed," said his wife Manju."I don't think my father will ever do such a thing. But if he has done it, he will have to face the consequences," said his daughter. CPI (M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, however, brushed aside Manju's allegations. "It's natural for family members of an arrested person to react like this," said Balakrishnan. Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday visited homes of both victims and also addressed a protest meeting. He accused the CPI (M) of hiding the real culprits."The CPI (M) is trying to put the blame on Peethamabaran. We demand a CBI probe into the matter. The Congress will not rest till all the real culprits are booked," said Chandy. Read: Kasargode double murder: Was CPI (M) aware of accused Peethambaran’s motive?

Sexual Assault
According to Childline officials, the child was being sexually abused with the knowledge of her mother.
In a major intervention, Childline officials in Malappuram district in Kerala rescued a 13-year-old girl, studying in class 8, from her house where she was allegedly being subjected to sexual abuse. The child, who was being sexually abused by two of her mother's friends, was rescued by the Childline officials and shifted to a care home in Manjeri on Monday. The child who hails from Manjeri in Malappuram, was showing reluctance to go back home from school for the past few days. According to the Childline officials, information about the child being subjected to sexual abuse came out through her teachers. “Teachers had been noticing her aversion to go back home after school. The child then told the issue about sexual abuse to her teachers when they enquired if she had any problems at home,” Anwar Karakkadan, coordinator of Childline told TNM. It was very disheartening to find out that the child was being assaulted with the knowledge of her mother, added Anwar.  As per directions of the Childline officials, Manjeri police arrested two persons, Muhammed (47) and Abdul Azees (55) on February 15, for sexually assaulting the girl. “Section 7 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been charged against the accused. The duo is now in prison in Malappuram,” NB Shaiju, Circle Inspector of Manjeri police station told TNM. As per the information given by Childline officials and police, one of the accused lives close to the victim’s house. “When we enquired the issues with close relatives of the victim including her siblings, information which the child gave was mostly found to be true. It was as per their request that we shifted the victim to a care home in Manjeri,” said Anwar.  Meanwhile, according to police officials, the child did not give any statement regarding her mother's involvement in the sexual abuse. “But it was found that the duo frequently visited the victim’s house and had close contact with the family,” said CI Shaiju. The victim’s father is working abroad for the past few years, while the child was  living with her two siblings and mother at home. The Childline officials have scheduled a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) sitting on Thursday to decide further proceedings in the matter.

Sreenivasan-Mohanlal fans lash out against scriptwriter Syam Pushkaran

Controversy
Syam had said in a recent interview that he did not approve of the message in Sreenivasan's 'Sandesham', apart from expressing critical views on a few Mohanlal films.
Syam Pushkaran would have very well known what was coming his way when he voiced his honest opinions about a couple of Malayalam films that have gained cult status in the state over the years in an interview. The Malayalam scriptwriter, who is presently riding a high following the success of his recently released film Kumbalangi Nights, said that he is not in support of the message that was shared in the movie, Sandesham, the popular 1991 Sreenivasan-Jayaram political satire. The film was directed by Sathyan Anthikad. It didn’t end there. In the same interview, the scriptwriter went on on to say that he simply didn’t like yet another film by the Sathyan-Sreenivasan combination, Varavelpu, which also starred actor Mohanlal. As expected, several self-confessed fans of these actors and films, started outraging against Syam, referring to him as “blind commie”, “anti-Mohanlal”, “communist” and so on. Sandesham, directed by Sathyan Anthikad and written by Sreenivasan, takes subtle digs at Left politics in Kerala and also on the political condition in the state as a whole. The film is known for the famous, “do not utter a single word about Poland” dialogue which is still a popular catchphrase among the people of the state . In an interview to Radio Mango, the RJ had asked Syam to give one line reviews about the movies she mentions. When asked about Sandesham, Syam Pushkaran said, “I don’t know what sandesham (message) is Sandesham trying to give out.” The Mayaanadhi scriptwriter went on to say that he is someone who supports student politics. “But Sandesham ends with a message that says that there should not be any student politics, which I find problematic. Whatever politics it is, I feel that students should have some politics,” he said. Following this, the RJ asked him what he thinks of the Mohanlal-starrer Varavelpu, to which Syam responded by saying, "it's a movie which I don’t like.” He went on to justify his view by saying that he feels sad every time he watches that movie. On being asked about yet another Mohanlal-starrer, Narasimham, which was a box-office hit in the state, the scriptwriter said that it's a “one time watch”. These statements by Syam turned out to be the perfect recipe for the "pongala" to start boiling in the YouTube comments section where the interview was uploaded. Predictably, many of the comments were along the lines of, “Just because a couple of his films have become successful, he thinks he can criticise anyone.” Responding to Syam’s statement about Sandesham not having any message, a user commented saying, “Even after 25 years, people still remember and talk about Sandesham. Let's see if your movies are remembered after so many years.” The users also resorted to calling him terms such as, “commie”, “Leftist”, “Left sympathiser” and so on. Recently, Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi was given such labels on social media, after he said in an interview that he was a fan of Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan. “I am a big fan of your writings but 10 years from now, people won’t be watching realistic movies like yours. But people will still watch Sandesham and Varavelpu. You have only read about the Left, whereas Sreenivasan has experienced it,” commented another user. Many of the users also claimed that Syam has "personal hatred" towards Sreenivasan and Mohanlal. One user added that Syam’s dislike towards Mohanlal was evident in Maheshinte Prathikaram (referring to a comic dialogue by a character stating that Mohanlal plays only upper caste roles in his movies, whereas Mammootty does all kinds of roles). Syam Pushkaran, along with his circle of friends, who are popularly said to have come from the “Aashiq Abu school of filmmaking” have been churning out a number of hits for the Malayalam film industry in recent times. He has previously written for various critically acclaimed movies like Maheshinte Prathikaram, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Mayaanadhi, 22 Female Kottayam, and Da Thadiya.

Kottayam Nazeer's short film 'Kuttichan' plagiarised? Filmmaker Sudevan accuses actor

Controversy
The filmmaker, Sudevan Peringode, accuses Nazeer of copying an entire segment from his 2017 film ‘Akatho Puratho’
Kottayam Nazeer, a comedian and mimicry artist turned filmmaker, has been accused of plagiarism following his 2019 short film Kuttichan releasing on YouTube. The film, which was promoted by prominent names from the Malayalam film industry, has been mired in controversy after independent filmmaker Sudevan Peringode observed that Nazeer’s film has copied the unique technique and filmmaking style seen in his 2017 movie Akatho Puratho. “A few friends of mine who are movie enthusiasts asked me to watch Nazeer’s Kuttichan. When I began watching the 15-minute movie, I immediately realised that the style of filmmaking was the same as what I had adopted in the 2nd segment of my 2.5 hour film. The segment is called Vruddhan or old man.  He (Nazeer) had just changed the dialogues and characters,” Peringode told TNM. Peringode’s Vruddhan is one of the 4 stories narrated in his film Akatho Puratho. The 20 minute long segment focuses on a bedridden man who is being taken care of by his family. Co-incidentally or not, Nazeer’s Kuttichan too deals with the very same plot - one where a bedridden man is visited by his childhood friend, played by Jaffar Idukki.  However, the similarity does not end there. Kuttichan also uses the same style of camera work as seen in Peringode’s Vruddhan - both films are narrated through the eyes of the bedridden man. While the old man himself is not visible, the camera becomes his eyes and the viewers watch the story unfold through him. Similarly, while one of the first scenes in Vruddhan is the daughter-in-law serving kanji or gruel to the old man, in Kuttichan, too, the daughter is heard telling Jaffar Idukki that she has just finished feeding Kuttichan some gruel or kanji. Sudevan says that while it is not uncommon for Malayalam filmmakers to make a few tweaks and then release films which are copies of works done by independent filmmakers, he felt the need to speak up about Kuttichan as he fears that his work might get discredited in the future. “Artists like Kottayam Nazeer are celebrities. Their work will receive crores of views in the next few weeks. I can only expect a maximum of 10,000 views for my films in a few months. Despite my film having released two years before Kuttichan, a lot of people will discredit my work and say that I plagiarised. So I want to make it clear that my work is 100 percent original. This is what I published on my Facebook page too,” he tells TNM. Sudevan recounts that it took him 5 years to conceive the idea of Akatho Puratho.   “I do a thorough research on my subject before I go start shooting. After its release, we have had 40 screenings of the film in Thrissur, Kozhikode etc,” he says. Filmmakers including Sanal Kumar Sasidharan of Sexy Durga fame have lent their support to Sudevan. In his Facebook post, Sanal wrote,”Despite winning a State Award,  he (Nazeer) must have had the confidence that nobody would have seen the original film. He began his new film  by thanking God and Superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty. But people will realise that what you have done is plain theft of Sudevan’s film." Sanal also emphasised that Sudevan must move the court following this incident. However, in his conversation with TNM, Sudevan made it clear that he was not interested in fighting a court case. “If Pace Trust, which has produced this film, decides to sue Nazeer, then I will support them. But I am not interested in fighting a case alone,” Sudevan added. Kottayam Nazeer could not be reached for a comment. Watch Kuttichan here:

How the Kasargode double murder could impact CPI(M)’s chances in Lok Sabha polls

Politics
The CPI(M) and the LDF have been pushed on the defensive following the incident, from the vigorous election campaign the coalition had planned, say sources.
Kripesh and Sharath Lal
The Left Government’s celebration on completing 1000 days in office began on Wednesday. However, it goes against convention or style for a government to celebrate 1000 days of functioning; rather, the celebrations are conducted on anniversaries from the date of assuming office. The Left conceived the celebration as a campaign for the Lok Sabha elections to rally support and get public opinion in their favour. While the ruling CPI (M) alliance was all set for a vigorous election campaign, the double murder in Kasargode has put a spanner in the works and pushed the CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on the defensive. Two Youth Congress workers were killed on Sunday and Peethambaran, a local leader of the CPI (M) is the prime accused in the case. CPI (M) has expelled Peethambaran from the party, and this action is the first of its kind coming from the party. The CPI (M) needs to conduct a parallel enquiry in a crime where party workers are the accused and the punishment or acquittal will also be the party’s decision. This deviation from practice is a visible sign of change from the party’s infamous unyielding stands in cases where its workers are involved. CPI (M) state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan’s statement that the party had no knowledge of the crime shows that the party has been caught in a fix. Sharath's family, Image Courtesy: VygaNews.com “The atmosphere prior to this incident in a way was favourable for CPI (M) and the LDF or something that could have been made favourable. They had conceived the campaign as one against corruption and communalism. Political violence has always backfired on the party. Now they are left with no option but to be restrained,” a source said. As many as 29 political murders have been reported in the state ever since the LDF government led by Pinarayi Vijayan came to power in May 2016. There are workers of the BJP, CPI (M), Congress and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) among those who were killed. The irony is that the LDF named its campaign rally Kerala Samrakshana Yathra (Kerala Protection March)- two parallel rallies led by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and CPI State Secretary Kanam Rajendran in the southern and northern regions respectively. With the party itself embroiled in a murder case, it will have to answer from whom the people need to be protected. The rally was held in Kasargode a day before the murder. How it will impact the party’s chances in the elections? “The party had an edge after the Sabarimala issue, for the progressive and stern stand it took. The murder of SFI leader Abhimanyu had made at least a few to think in favour of the party. But the double murders have brought back all that had been buried in the past. It has even brought back memories of the killing of TP Chandrasekharan, apart from that of Youth Congress worker Shuhaib and Youth League worker Ariyil Abdul Shukoor,” another source said. “This will hamper the party’s chances in the elections; it will even have repercussions in constituencies like Vadakara, Kasargode and Kannur. The recently held opinion polls had predicted that the party will win in these three constituencies, though it would win less seats in general category. Now the party needs to work harder to retain the winning possibilities,” he pointed out. Kasargode is the northernmost district in the state and Kannur and Vadakara in Kozhikode are in the neighbouring region. In the history of elections in Kerala since 1957, the Congress has managed to win the Kasargode constituency only thrice. Kasargode has always been a Left stronghold, and it is the third term for senior leader CPI (M) P Karunakaran as MP from Kasargode. The CBI team investigating the Shukoor murder case recently submitted the charge sheet against CPI(M) Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan and state committee member TV Rajesh MLA in the case. In the TP murder case, the frequent parole granted to CPI (M) leader and convict in the case, PK Kunjananthan was flayed by the High Court. The murder of TP in 2015 had a profound impact on the people of Kerala. He was brutally hacked to death and there were numerous cuts on his body. Kripesh's House, Image Courtesy:VygaNews.Com Pinarayi Vijayan was the state Secretary of the CPI (M) when TP was killed. Pinarayi had said that the party had no role in the murder, but Kunjananthan’s arrest proved it wrong. TP’s murder happened when the campaign for the bye-election for Neyyatinakara Assembly constituency in Thiruvananthapuram was at its peak. The party lost the election. It is yet to recover from the damage caused by the TP Chandrasekharan murder. The incident even made many party workers who were part of the Left political platform for several years, to part ways. Was the party aware of the plot in the double murder? According to sources, the state leadership’s claim this time that it wasn’t in the know could be true to an extent.
