Controversy
On Thursday, the state CPI (M) refuted all allegations after Binoy produced letters from Dubai police and legal authorities that there is no case registered against him.
The CPI (M)’s crucial Kannur district party conference gets underway on Saturday during which the raging controversy over an alleged fraud committed by party state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's son in Dubai is likely to be discussed. The Kannur district party unit is the home turf of Balakrishnan and also Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. According to latest party figures, Kannur district currently leads the rest of the country in having the largest number of Communist Party of India-Marxist workers. A media report alleging that Binoy Balakrishnan, son of Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, had committed Rs 13 crore fraud with a Dubai-based company, has triggered a major controversy in Kerala. A three-page letter, dated January 5, from HIA Al Marzooqi, sponsor of the Dubai company, which was made available to the media, states that he has started legal procedures against Binoy for the alleged fraud. On Thursday, the state CPI (M) refuted all allegations after Binoy produced letters from Dubai police and legal authorities that there is no case registered against him. The party said that "canards" are being spread against them and cited this as the most recent one. Though for the time being, through these new letters, the party appears to have swept the issue under the carpet, it is surely set to be discussed with the state party Secretary in the news for the wrong reason. Another issue that could surface is of P Jayarajan, the present District Secretary of the party, who has a huge fan following in Kannur and was given a dressing down by Balakrishnan after the top leadership of the party expressed resentment at the way Jayarajan was engaged in "self glorifying". So with Jayarajan cut up with both Balakrishnan and Vijayan, and given the huge support base that he has, all eyes are on how Jayarajan's close aides will take up the issue of the alleged financial fraud. And to see that things are kept under check, both Balakrishnan and Vijayan will be present all through the three-day meeting. Speaking to the media, Jayarajan on Friday said meetings are the place where all issues are discussed and it could also be the time to introspect. Leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala who raked up the Binoy issue on the floor of the assembly this week, on Friday speaking at a party meeting in Alappuzha said the news "shows the real face" of the CPI (M). He said the Left party has to give an explanation on what's happening to the party and the way in which the children of top leaders are "leading a lavish lifestyle".

Wesley and Sini Mathews voluntarily agreed to give up their parental rights in a custody hearing.
The adoptive parents of Sherin Mathews, the three-year-old Indian girl who was found dead in a culvert in Dallas, Texas, gave up custody and parental rights to their biological daughter on Saturday. According to a report in the Indian Express, Wesley and Sini Mathews voluntarily agreed to give up their parental rights in a custody hearing. Attorney Mitch Nolte who represents Sini Mathews said that, “Sini made the extremely difficult decision to give up her parental rights because, given the circumstances and the pending criminal cases, this is in the best interests of the child. She wants what’s best for her remaining daughter”, the report said. A Dallas judge had blocked the couple earlier from keeping contact with their 4-year-old surviving child after prosecutors argued that they failed to protect Sherin, added the report. Earlier this month, Wesley Mathew was indicted for capital murder by a grand jury. His wife Sini Mathews was also indicted on the charge of abandoning a child. Wesley also faces charges of abandoning a child and tampering with evidence. Sini and Wesley, natives of Kerala, had adopted Sherin from an orphanage in Bihar in July 2016.  Sherin Mathews disappeared on October 7 and her father first claimed that he had sent her out in the wee hours of the morning as punishment for not drinking her milk. Days later, Sherin's body was recovered from a culvert under a road, around one kilometre from her home in suburban Dallas on October 22. Wesley then changed his statement and said Sherin had choked on her milk and had stopped breathing. Thinking that she was dead, he removed her body from their home.  Sherin was a child with developmental issues and the American adoption agency submitted four follow-up reports to Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). These reports observed that although Sherin was "safe and comfortable" at her new home, the parents found it difficult to feed the child.  The couple have a four-year-old biological daughter who was taken away by Child Protective Services (CPS), soon after Sherin's disappearance.  Since then, Sini Mathews has been fighting to get custody of her biological child.

Kerala woman Imam leads Friday prayers for the first time, faces backlash

Women Power
And right on cue, the pioneer woman Imam (leader) is receiving backlash from fundamentalists, and is being accused of going against Islam.
Jamida teacher
A Muslim woman has defied customs to lead Friday prayers for the first time in Kerala – and perhaps even India. When 34-year-old Jamida teacher led Jumu'ah – the Friday prayer for Muslims – in Malappuram, she went against age-old customs followed by the community members that barred women from doing so. And right on cue, the pioneer woman Imam (leader) is receiving backlash from fundamentalists, and is being accused of going against Islam. "I am receiving phone calls from mosque committees telling me that I have defied Islam. On social media too, there are people who are speaking against me, claiming that I am trying to destroy the religion and its ways,” Jamida tells TNM. Taking a practical view on the matter though, she asks, “But will change in the society come so easily?" On Friday, Jamida, who is the general secretary of Quran Sunnat Society, led the prayers held at the society's Central Committee office in Wandoor in Malappuram district. Hours after venturing into territory that had been alien for women of the community till now, Jamida says that she fears for her life."Quran Sunnat Society has been involved in several movements including ones against the primitive, unfair practice of triple talaq. I have faced death threats in the past for leading those campaigns and I am sure, this move of mine has upset the high and mighty. May be they will want to wipe me off the face of the earth, but I am prepared for it," Jamida says. What prevented women till now? Jamida points out that the Quran had been interpreted for the convenience of men so that they could hold the strings of power and therefore, discriminate against women. However, there's nothing in the holy text that prohibits a woman from being an Imam, Jamida argues."Quran is not discriminatory towards women. The idea put forth in the text is that of gender equality and not of discrimination. Have you seen women holding any position in a mosque? No. All these years, the men who hold power treated us that way and kept us out so that they could continue to rule over us. This is exactly why Islamic preachers on a television debate condemned what I did, but could not prove that my action was against the Quran. Precisely because it wasn't," Jamida explains. The prayer was not held in a mosque, but in the society's office. Asked about this, Jamida says, "One needn't go to a religious institution to pray. Why should we have a dedicated establishment to carry out our prayers? It will take a long time before women will start leading the prayers in mosques, but that day will come." For Jamida, the US-based scholar Amina Wadud, who is the first Muslim woman in the world to have led the Juma'ah prayers, is a source of inspiration."When I read up on her, I realised the kind of struggle she went through to do what she did. Voting rights for women in America were not granted one fine day. Similarly, I believe that every movement, every revolution will take time. Change will come definitely, but it will only come gradually," Jamida says.

Ground report: How Kerala plans to be inclusive in its 2nd literacy revolution

Education
The Kerala government’s total literacy programme was inaugurated on January 26 and aims to include tribal and coastal communities.
A crowd of women flocked around the Saksharata (Literacy) Mission School, in Kadakkavoor gram panchayat in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday evening. Though their muddied clothes spoke of a day's long hard work in the fields, their faces bore no sign of weariness. They swiftly settled down in the classroom set up by the Kerala government to expand their literacy mission to tribal areas. The adult classroom, the only one in the panchayat, is in a colony where the majority of people are from the Dalit community. The women were eager to listen to the officials who spoke of the need for basic education. They had gathered in the Saksharata Mission School to enroll themselves in the Kerala government’s Paripoorna Saksharatha programme or total literacy programme, as part of its second literacy revolution. The total literacy programme which was inaugurated on January 26, 2018, aims to include those who were left out when Kerala was declared a total literate state in the year 1991. Kerala now boasts of 93 per cent literacy rate. Reaching out to the marginalised Speaking to TNM, Dr P S Sreelekha, director of Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority, said, “Our aim is to make the literacy programme more inclusive and educate the tribal and coastal belt in the state. Dropout rates are high among these communities due to various financial and social issues. We have to reach out to them.” Going by the norms of the UNESCO, if a state has achieved 90 per cent or above literacy level, then it is declared a 'total literate state'. Kerala is thus considered to be a state which has achieved total literacy. But this status excludes a marginalised section of the society in Kerala. According to the Literacy Mission officials, in a survey conducted by the state government in 2011, it was found that a population of eighteen and a half lakh were illiterates and they could not read or write. This population roughly contributed to around 7 per cent of Kerala’s total population. Geeta, a daily wage labourer, is 55 years old and had to drop out from school early because her family could not afford the expense. Her face brightens up when asked if she is excited to go to school once again. She buries her face in her palms, then settles down on a low mud wall, and takes out four betel leaves before starting to speak. “I don’t remember much from my school days. I had to drop out early. We couldn’t afford it. I want to read the route display boards of the buses that I take. Sometimes I don’t know which one to board, I always have to depend on the fellow passengers in the bus stand. That’s all my need is," says Geeta. Geeta wants to read the route display boards of the buses she takes  The Literacy Mission officials have devised different levels of education programmes meant to accommodate those who haven’t received any sort of formal education and the rest who dropped out after primary education. “We have prepared Saksharata Padavali (literacy textbooks) state-wide to bring in uniformity and efficiency in the teaching. Beginning from January 26, we are aiming at a total of hundred teaching hours for those with no formal education whatsoever and the exams are expected to be conducted in April first week," said Prasanth Kumar, District Coordinator of the literacy programme. “We then have a six month programme which is equivalent to the 4th grade. We have also outlined similar such programmes equivalent to 7th grade, 10th grade and higher secondary. Those who have dropped out after 4th, 7th or 10th classes can join the appropriate courses for themselves and need not take all the classes," added Prasanth. Omana, another daily wage labourer, is 60 years old and is hoping to write her own name and sign the documents by herself. She is excited to design a signature for herself. So far, her signature was only three horizontal lines, drawn one below the other. “I want to sign like an educated woman. All my life I have drawn three lines, like the ones on the back of a squirrel on papers, instead of my own signature," says Omana. Omana aspires to write her own signature one day Literacy Mission authorities have employed thousands of tutors called 'Prerakhs' as part of the mission to teach in various districts. In the 2084 education centers set up by the authorities, as many Prerakhs are also deployed. “We have arranged 2084 tutors in all the 2084 educational centers across the district. These tutors can also take help from young volunteers to ease out the process and improve efficiency," says Pradeep Kumar S, PRO, Literacy Mission. Kadakkavoor gram panchayat has two such volunteers, Reshma and Akshara. Reshma is doing her course in Autocad and Akshara is doing her masters in Commerce. Reshma and Akshara “We are expecting to take two or three classes a week, according to their (the students') convenience. They are very supportive of the mission and co-operate with us. They come here with a willingness to learn," says Reshma. How effective is the programme? Though the state government has initiated such progressive policies to educate the marginalised, the colony dwellers have another side to the story. While there are persons like Omana who have never been to school before, the colony has also seen educated women ending up as daily wage labourers. They say the journey to find a government job is too hard for them. Indira is 60 years old and holds a BSc degree in Mathematics. Today, she is a daily wage labourer under the government scheme 'Thozilurappu' like any uneducated women in her colony. “I got my BSc Mathematics degree from Varkala College. I tried many years for a government job, I couldn’t get one for myself. And I had to get back to physical labour to meet the needs of the family. We need a platform that can make us feel secure along with the education," says Indira. Indira procured her BSc degree in Mathematics from Varkala College, Thiruvananthapuram Chitralekha is also enrolled under the government’s 'Thozilurappu' scheme and is an 8th std drop-out. She can read and write. “These classes will be conducted for a few days, an exam is taken and mostly it ends there. After that, a thorough follow-up is not done. Most people forget what has been taught. I don’t know ways of learning other than repeating after the teacher with a board and a piece of chalk. There must be new ways of learning, isn’t it ?” asks Chitralekha. Chitralekha is a daily wage labourer and is proud that she can read and write  Meanwhile, the Literacy Mission Authorities say that they are working on crafting innovative methods to educate such communities and discover more effective ways of testing instead of traditional exams. “We are thinking of an innovative method to replace traditional exams. In the new book that we have issued, we have portions to encourage discussions on social issues, constitutional rights, secularism and gender issues," says Dr Sreelekha. Kerala’s second literacy revolution is certainly a people’s campaign and a progressive measure which gets support from all the parties across the political spectrum. “We did not face much challenges to execute this programme. We get massive back-up from the local bodies. This is more like a people’s campaign and all political bodies extent their support despite their inner party conflicts," says Pradeep, PRO, Literacy Mission.

The incident occurred at around 9: 20am in the school playground.  The boy was rushed to the Medical College, Kozhikode, but he could not be saved. The deceased has been identified as Adhish and he was 11 years old. Police have registered a case in Kozhikode City Traffic Police Station under IPC and the body has been released to the boy’s family after inquest. Sreejith, SI, Kozhikode City Traffic Police Station told TNM that, “We are investigating into the matter. A case has been registered under IPC 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way in a manner as to endanger human life) and 304 A (causing death by negligence). The Thiruvananthapuram First Class Judicial Magistrate Court acquitted the senior NCP leader, and also dismissed a fresh PIL asking for re-investigation.
In a major relief for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former minister AK Saseendran, a Kerala court acquitted him in the sleaze tape case on Saturday.   The Thiruvananthapuram First Class Judicial Magistrate Court acquitted the senior NCP leader, and also dismissed a fresh Public Interest Litigation (PIL) asking for re-investigation. The order came in a case filed by a woman journalist of Mangalam TV channel against the minister, alleging that he asked her for sexual favours. Speaking to media after the verdict, a smiling Saseendran said that he was happy that he was acquitted.   The verdict has come after several twists in the case. Although the woman journalist had filed the complaint against Saseendran in the lower court, she approached the High Court months later, seeking to withdraw the complaint. However, in a u-turn a few weeks later, she told the HC that she did not want to withdraw the petition.  The case dates back to March 26, 2017, when the newly-launched Malayalam news channel Mangalam TV aired the audio tape alleged to be that of Saseendran indulging in sleazy talk with a woman. Although the woman's voice was edited out and Saseendran was criticised for having exploited a woman, it soon came to light that it was a case of honey trapping. Following this, the woman journalist filed a complaint with the CJM court in April.  Read: ‘Saseendran harassed me many times, I recorded the calls’: Mangalam woman journo goes to court The supposed "expose" that earned much criticism for the channel, forced Saseendran to step down as the Transport Minister on the same day the channel aired the clip. After the issue blew up into a major controversy, Mangalam channel CEO Ajith came on air to admit that the channel had done a sting operation on the minister. Following this, the police registered an FIR against Ajith Kumar and eight other employees of the channel.  The controversy also led to the LDF government appointing the PS Antony Commission to probe the case. Months later in November last year, AK Saseendran got a clean chit from the commission.

How the Kerala police tracked down a newborn girl 'sold off' by parents from TN

While the police brought the girl back to Kerala, it has also shed light on a baby-selling racket.
An infant from Kerala's Palakkad district was brought back to the state on Saturday morning, almost a month since her parents allegedly sold her off in a neighboring state for a sum of Rs 1,10,000. As the Kerala police went in search of the newborn baby girl to Tamil Nadu, where her parents allegedly sold her, little did they expect that it would lead to busting a huge baby-selling racket. Bindu, a native of Kanissery in Palakkad gave birth to her fifth child, a girl, on December 25, 2017, at the district hospital. Bindu left with her husband Raja and their five children to Pollachi two days after the delivery. When the couple returned from Raja's house in Pollachi after spending more than a week with his mother Viji, they returned without the newborn baby girl. Word soon spread that Bindu had returned home to Palakkad without her infant. Speaking to TNM, Daivini who works as a teacher at the nearby Anganwadi recounts how she confronted the couple about their "missing" infant."People were saying that Bindu might have sold off the baby and I went to their house along with the helper at the anganwadi. When we questioned Bindu, she insisted that she left the baby in the care of her mother-in-law in Pollachi. She told the same to her own parents living next door. But we were suspicious about her claim and persisted," Daivini says. However, being a hot-tempered man that he is, Raja got defensive and began to argue with them, Daivini says."Raja told us that he will do whatever he wants with his child. After all, its his baby and not ours, he argued, and said that he will sell her if he deems fit," she says. She believes that Raja had threatened Bindu into hiding the matter from everyone, since he allegedly kept warning Bindu that he will not provide for her and the kids if she opens her mouth.  On a hunt for the baby The anganwadi staff alerted the Childline and the police, who took the couple into custody for questioning last week. On the basis of their statements, a team of Kerala police went to Pollachi to question Raja's mother Viji. According to Bindu's statements, Viji was instrumental in selling off the baby, claiming that her son do not have the money to raise another child. The search for the baby led the Kerala police to Pollachi and then to Erode."Raja's mother Viji confessed that she gave the baby to one Sumathy, who in turn gave the baby to Janardhanan. Both Sumathy and Janardhanan are agents. This is a huge, organised racket," Alathur SI Aneesh, who led the investigation told TNM. Laying the trap News of Sumathy's arrest might have tipped off Janardhanan, the police say. In an attempt to catch him red-handed, the police, with the help of TN police, reached out to Janardhanan claiming to be "customers.""We called him up yesterday (Friday) morning posing as customers, but he didn't speak to us freely. Later, we called him up as police officials and asked him to come to a specified location with the baby. By then he understood that he could no longer escape and came with the baby. We believe Janardhanan had sold off the baby to a family and had taken her back after we called him up," the SI says. The baby and Janardhanan were brought to Palakkad on Saturday morning. All the five accused- Bindu, Raja, Raja's mother Viji, Sumathy and Janardhanan have been charged with sections 370, 317 of IPC, section 80, 81 of Juvenile Justice Act and were remanded to judicial custody. The infant, meanwhile, have been shifted to a state home. While the police say that the infant is safe, they believe that nabbing Janardhanan would help in busting the racket.

There was panic at Kochi’s Wellington Island on Saturday afternoon after Ammonia gas leaked into the air, from a facility of the Fertilisers And Chemicals Travancore (FACT). Fortunately, the mishap did not result in any loss of life. Students who were present in schools nearby, complained of breathing problems. 14 people were rushed to hospitals in the vicinity and later discharged. Two fire officers, one at the Medical Trust Hospital and another at Port Trust Hospital are presently under medical supervision, but reports suggest that their condition is stable. Out of them, Sethu Nandan, who made an effort to seal the leak, was admitted with 2% burns, while CISF constable Jacquard was shifted to the hospital after experiencing nausea and shivering, due to the mishap. According to the police, the leak occurred at around 1:30 pm and was brought under control soon, as it was not a major mishap. The police also said that the leak occurred on a Saturday, a partial holiday, which helped them in the relief operations and in damage control. According to reports, the faulty nozzle of a gas tanker is suspected to be the source of the leak. Soon after the leak, a rapid response team from the Health Department rushed to the spot and made emergency arrangements. Another team of the disaster management authority, led by Deputy Collector Sheela Devi, held a meeting with officials of the company. Traffic was also diverted from the area to prevent further complexities. The incident in Kochi occurred after a slightly bigger ammonia leak was detected in Goa on January 19, when a gas tanker turned turtle. The accident at Goa had occurred in the wee hours of the day and people had to be woken up, before being ferried to a safer location, reports said. Ammonia is colourless gas with a strong pungent smell and is a key component for refrigeration, fertilisers and is used as a raw material for many industries including the pharmaceutical sector. The substance is even found in domestic cleaning solutions, but high concentration of Ammonia in the atmosphere is hazardous and can also be inflammable. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, inhalation of high concentrations produces violent coughing due to its local action on the respiratory tract. If rapid escape is not possible, it can result in severe lung irritation, pulmonary edema and even death. Lower concentrations cause eye irritation, pulmonary edema and bronchitis.

‘We’re close friends,’ says MLA Swaraj, taking on harassers in Shani Prabhakaran row

Writing on Facebook, the MLA asked why their friendship was the subject of a smear campaign in the media.
Days after a smear campaign was unleashed on senior journalist Shani Prabhakaran of Manorama News and Left Democratic Front MLA M Swaraj, the latter has spoken out against the harassers.  In a Facebook post late on Saturday, Swaraj said that Shani is a long-time friend, even before the two decided on their respective careers – a politician and a media person. Earlier this week, photographs of Shani and Swaraj together inside a lift were circulated on social media, with defamatory remarks laced with sexual undertones, made against Shani. An online news portal Narada News had also published an article claiming that Shani held talks with Swaraj so that she could be a CPI (M) candidate in Ernakulam.  Refusing to take the harassment lying down, Shani had filed a complaint with the State Police Chief, complaining that her pictures with friend were being used to unleash a cyberattack on her.  Read the story in detail: Journalist Shani Prabhakaran goes to cops after abusers target her with sexual innuendos Swaraj was silent about the controversy at first, but he finally commented about it through a Facebook post. "I had thought I will not offer a comment in this matter. But then I thought I must, after realising the extent of sexism in these attacks," Swaraj wrote in Malayalam.  He added: "What kind of discussions are happening because Shani visited me. A lot of our friends come to visit us in the apartment I live along with my wife. Why are such friendly visits being dubbed as political and given other meanings? Shani is not just one among the many visitors, she is a close friend. It is a friendship that started way before we became politician and journalist. It is a friendship that continues to be strong, despite differences in political views and journalism. The disgusting smear campaigns can continue. We will continue to be friends." He also shared a photograph of him and Shani in the post.

Former Kerala minister AK Saseendran to return to cabinet? Congress cries foul

AK Saseendran was acquitted by a court in Kerala in the Mangalam TV honey trap case.
File Photo
A day after a Kerala court acquitted former Transport Minister and NCP leader AK Saseendran in the sleaze tape case, he appears all set to return to the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet.   Calling the Mangalam TV honey trap case an old issue, NCP’s state chief TP Peethambaran on Sunday hinted that there was no objection for his party colleague’s re-entry to the Kerala cabinet. An elated Saseendran also told reporters in Kozhikode that the decision to regain his ministerial post will be taken after consulting everyone including his party colleague and his replacement in the cabinet, Thomas Chandy, who was forced to step down last November over land grabbing allegations.     "Will discuss with Thomas Chandy as well. All opinions will be considered. Thomas Chandy is not my enemy and I don't think that there was a conspiracy against me within the party," Saseendran said. NCP has only two MLAs in the Left Democratic Front. Saseendran was Transport Minister until March 2017 when newly-launched Malayalam news channel Mangalam TV aired an audio tape where a man was speaking inappropriately with a woman. The channel alleged that the voice was that of Saseendran, and that he had called the woman and spoken to her for sexual favours, after she came to him asking for help. It later came to light that it was a case of honey trapping. When Saseendran stepped down as minister in March 2017 Chandy succeeded him, retaining the lone ministerial berth of the party. But Chandy, who was Saseendran’s replacement, was also forced to resign after eight months following allegations that he encroached upon land to construct a luxury private resort in Alapuzha. Since then, Chief Minister Pinarayi has been handling the portfolio, a clear indication that the berth will be reserved for the party. Following Chandy stepping down, the NCP held the view that the ministerial berth will be allocated to either Chandy or Saseendran, depending on who is cleared of the charges first. “It would be like first come first get basis, the ministerial berth will be gone for him who will first acquitted by the court,” Peethambaran had told media persons. On Saturday, the Thiruvananthapuram First Class Judicial Magistrate Court acquitted Saseendran, clearing his path to return to cabinet. The court also dismissed a fresh Public Interest Litigation asking for re-investigation in the case. But politicking has begun over his likely re-entry. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said that by giving the ministerial position to Saseendran once again, the real face of the LDF, which often takes the moral high ground on issues, has been exposed. “His acquittal by court doesn’t mean that what was wrong is not wrong. Everyone had heard the voice of Saseendran in the audio clip. He hadn’t denied that it was his voice. His sudden resignation was caused by guilt,” Chennithala said in a statement.

Kerala college students allege principal tricked them into eating beef to ‘satisfy ego’

Controversy
The students claimed that this was the principal’s way of getting back at them when they conducted a Saraswati Puja on campus without his permission.
College of Engineering Kuttand (CUCEK)
A few vegetarian students of a Kerala college have accused the principal of deceiving them into allegedly eating beef at an event held on campus, on Thursday.  A number of students of Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttand (CUCEK), in Alappuzha, hailing from several northern states and members of the BJP's student wing, ABVP, have said that the principal, Dr Sunil Kumar, "left no stone unturned in hurting the religious sentiments of the north Indian students”. They have now approached the District Magistrate seeking action against Dr Kumar, alleging that he tried to "satisfy his ego" by tricking them into eating beef. This, the students claim, was done after they organised a Saraswati Puja in the college earlier this week, against the principal’s orders to call it off.  The beef story According to the students, beef cutlets were served during a seminar conducted on the college premises on January 25. They asked if it was vegetarian and, on being assured it was, they ate the cutlets. Speaking to TNM, one of the students who complained to the DM said: "We asked them repeatedly whether it was vegetarian and the staff assured us it was. So we ate the cutlets. But after some time, a few Malayali students said that it was beef cutlets that were served."  The students allege that it was a conspiracy to make them eat beef. "Otherwise, during seminars conducted in college, they never give any snacks without taking a registration fee from us. This time they gave tea and snacks for free, which means the principal had already planned to cheat us," one student claimed. However, Dr Kumar denied the allegations while speaking to TNM. He said that the seminar was not organised by the college, but by a forum of retired bank employees. He emphasised that the organisers had told the students that both vegetarian and beef cutlets were being served. "They might have eaten it by mistake, but I am sure they were told that beef cutlets were also being served at the seminar. Beef is not served at out college canteen and if the snacks were taken from there, I could have been answerable. But this event was organised by outsiders and they handled all the expenses, including the budget for refreshments. Now, the students have not raised a complaint with me or the university, but have directly approached the DM. If they indeed wanted to solve the issue, they would have raised a complaint with the university," he said.  The third-year engineering student who spoke to TNM, however, alleged that Dr Kumar was "satisfying his ego" by tricking them into eating beef. "Every year we conduct Saraswati Puja with the college’s permission. But this year, it coincided with an ABVP strike protesting the killing of an ABVP member in Kannur. The principal withdrew permission to hold the puja, but we went ahead and conducted it without causing any issues. The next day, on January 23, after we took out a procession (to protest the killing of the ABVP man) and one student was suspended for doing so," said the student, who requested anonymity.  Dr Kumar told TNM that the "conditional" permission was withdrawn when the ABVP strike disrupted classes. While permission was given to carry out the procession in the morning – before the classes commenced – this was also not followed, the principal said. "They carried out the procession during class hours and that's why the student who sought permission was suspended," he said.

By Sanu George The tussle between Kerala superstar Mammootty and actor-turned-legislator KB Ganesh Kumar over control of the powerful Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) is now out in the open, with the superstar seemingly not keen on allowing the latter to the helm. While Mammootty, who is himself not keen on the post but wants to play the kingmaker, Ganesh Kumar is adamant about taking charge. Fifty-two-year-old Kumar, a former minister and four-time legislator, is the son of political veteran R Balakrishna Pillai, whose Kerala Congress (B), after parting ways with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), is awaiting the green signal to join the ruling CPI (M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). Kumar has had two stints as minister -- both with the UDF: First in 2001, but he stepped down in favour of his father after a while, and then in 2011, when he had to quit as domestic issues surfaced, which eventually led to a divorce. Ever since the arrest and the incarceration for 85 days of upcoming superstar Dileep last year in a case relating to the kidnapping of a woman actor, AMMA, which is currently led by popular comedian and Left-supported Lok Sabha member Innocent, has gone into a shell. Dileep was suspended from AMMA soon after his arrest, a move that was criticised by Ganesh Kumar.  AMMA has not been able to convene a meeting of its office-bearers. And, a new generation of stars led by Prithviraj have put their foot down after Innocent, propped up by Mammootty and his fellow superstar Mohanlal and other seniors, wished to revoke Dileep's suspension. Having headed the AMMA for over a decade now, Innocent has of late been feeling that he was losing clout in the organisation. So, he has announced that he will not be seeking a fresh term as the chief. Following this, Ganesh Kumar, who is an executive member, decided to throw his hat in the ring. It was then that Mammootty decided to play his cards to ensure that the actor-turned-politician's desire did not see fruition. A senior actor told IANS on condition of anonymity that the two have never shared good relations since Kumar became a minister in the AK Antony cabinet in 2001."It is the fat big egos that reign supreme in our industry, and with Mammootty -- the numero uno of our industry and a CPI (M) favourite -- the tiff intensified after Ganesh Kumar felt that it was the superstar who stands between him and a Cabinet post (if and when Ganesh Kumar joins the ruling CPI (M)," said the actor. With the old guard in AMMA, with the lone exception of Mammootty, supporting Ganesh Kumar, and the new guard not keen on him, one will have to wait till July when AMMA selects  new president at its annual general meeting to find out who will emerge victorious in this tussle. The Archdiocese Movement for Transparency urged the Syro Malabar Church to make public the report that found irregularities in its recent land deal.
UCA News.Com
The Archdiocese Movement for Transparency (AMT) in Kerala held its first meeting on Sunday and demanded that the findings of the commission formed to probe financial irregularities in the land deals of the church be made public. The AMT was formed in a bid to ensure transparency in the functioning of the Ernakulam-Angamaly diocese of the Syro Malabar Church. The commission that probed the land deals was headed by Cardinal Mar George Alencherry and it looked into the reports of the church incurring a huge loss when it sold land in Ernakulam. The church had taken out a loan in the past and bought a tract of land to construct a medical college; but this deal put the church in massive debt. Hence, it was forced to sell another piece of land to repay this amount. However, it allegedly sold the land for a lower price, ensuring it incurred huge losses. “There were three devotees and three priests in the commission. The report is not out yet,” Shine Varghese, who is a part of AMT, told TNM. He added that there was an attempt by those who opposed ‘the reformation’ to disrupt the meeting, but it resumed after a short interruption. Father Augustine Vattoli, a priest, presented the facts about the land deals in the meeting. The gathering also demanded that the commission report be made available for the public as well. Another demand raised in the meeting was that committees be formed with devotees as members to handle the administration and property-related deals of the church. For this, the law of the church needs to be amended. The meeting also decided to submit a grand memorandum to the church heads to ensure transparency in all its deals. AMT was formed earlier this month, with devotees and priests as members, after alleged financial irregularities in the church’s land deals were exposed.

The accused is the son of the director of an orphanage where the minor was residing.
On Sunday, the Kerala police arrested a 25-year-old man in Kozhikode on charges of sexual assault and criminal intimidation of a 13-year-old Dalit girl in his father’s orphanage. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The accused is identified as Austin, the son of the director of an orphanage in Kozhikode. The complainant is a school student in Kozhikode. In her statement, she has alleged that Austin sexually assaulted her over the Christmas holidays, and threatened her not to reveal the incident. She also alleged that Austin’s mother physically tortured her. Austin was arrested on the basis of the statement given by the minor. “We had taken the statement from the minor on Saturday and arrest was made based on those details. Austin is currently under police custody,” Assistant Commissioner of Kozhikode, Prithviraj told TNM. “The minor has alleged sexual harassment charges on Austin and she has also said that his mother had physically tortured her. She told us that the incident had happened during the Christmas vacation. The case is progressing and we are investigating the matter,” he added. Austin’s mother has been booked under the Juvenile Justice Act, the Assistant Commissioner added. However, so far there’s no case against the orphanage. The police said that Austin has denied all charges, and that they are investigating the matter. The girl belongs to the Pulaya community – a Scheduled Caste in Kerala. A case has been registered at Kunnamangalam police station under Sections 7 and 8 of POCSO (sexual assault), the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as well as IPC sections 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), and 506 (1) (offence of criminal intimidation). The orphanage authorities were unavailable for comment.

An accident at a fertilisers factory in Kochi’s Willingdon Island on Saturday resulted in a panic, but the situation was soon brought under control. Now, the police have investigated the case, and have blamed it on human error. Ammonia gas leaked into the air at the Fertilisers And Chemicals Travancore factory in the city, during a transfer of the chemical from the factory to a tanker for transport. A faulty nozzle in the tanker had earlier been identified as the source of the leak. However, police now claim that negligence on part of the tanker driver caused the leak. "The tanker capsule was being filled when the accident occurred. The driver overheard a direction given to another vehicle to take it out of the filling point. The driver, confused, took it to mean his own vehicle which was being filled and moved forward. The valve got disconnected, leading to the massive leakage,'' a senior police officer said. A case has been registered in the Kochi Harbor police station. “We have registered a case against the tanker driver under IPC 284 (Negligent conduct with respect to poisonous substance), IPC 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others) and IPC 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention),” an official told TNM. Cops have said that the investigation is still in progress. “The vehicle is under Kerala registration but it is yet to be brought to the police station. More details can be revealed only after further investigation,” added the official. Meanwhile earlier reports suggest that students who went to schools close by, complained of breathing problems and 14 people were rushed to nearby hospitals and later discharged. Reports also added that Sethu Nandan, who made an effort to seal the leak, was admitted with 2% burns, while CISF constable Jacquard was shifted to the hospital after experiencing nausea and shivering, due to the incident. A disaster management authority team, led by Deputy Collector Sheela Devi, held a meeting with officials of the company in the wake of the incident.

The woman had moved HC in November 2017 alleging that a Muslim man tried to convert her to Islam and forged documents to marry her.
Months after a Hindu woman from Kerala moved the High court alleging that a Muslim man tried to convert her to Islam and forged documents to marry her, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has announced its decision to probe the controversial case. NIA had said that it was ready to probe the matter under the High Court’s directive. The decision follows the arrest of two persons – Fayas (24) and Siyad (48) – earlier this month by Ernakulam police in connection with the case. The men were charged with helping Muhammad Riyas, the key accused in the case. In her petition to the HC, the woman had mentioned that Muhammad Riyas, a native of New Mahe, near Thalassery, had taken her to Saudi Arabia and had plans to take her to Syria thereafter, to be sold as a sex slave to ISIS. The woman had moved the HC in November 2017,  and a case was registered on December 13, 2017. She asked for an NIA investigation into the matter, and levelled sexual exploitation and other charges on Muhammad Riyas. The ‘husband’ however had denied all accusations and charges.   Background The woman, a native of Pathanamthitta who grew up in Gujarat, met Muhammad Riyas in 2014 while studying at a college in Bengaluru. In her petition, she alleged that Riyas forced her to have sexual intercourse with him, and also claimed that he recorded the act to threaten her further. She further said that Riyas forcibly enrolled her in a madrassa and forged documents to get their marriage registered in May 2016. Riyas later took her to Saudi Arabia along with his family in August where she was forced to watch videos of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. She managed to escape and contact her family in Gujarat in October.

Tragedy
The workers were putting the finishing touches on the roof, which was made of concrete, of the stage when the accident occurred.
At least nine people were injured, two of whom are critical, when a stage collapsed at the Puttingal Devi temple at Paravur on Monday. The two who are in serious condition sustained severe injuries to their head and backbone, and have been rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The others are currently in Parippally Medical College Hospital and Nedungolam Taluk Hospital, said a Manorama report. The stage was under construction outside the temple, and it had not been financed by the temple committee. The work on the stage had started a few months ago, and the police said that workers were putting the finishing touches on the roof, which was made of concrete, when the accident occurred. A case has been registered against the contractors under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. “The contractor was negligent. He should have ensured better-quality materials were used while constructing the stage,” said Baiju, a senior civil police officer in Paravur. The temple has already witnessed one major tragedy in the past, when a blast during a fireworks display, during the annual festival, killed over 100 people and injured scores of others in 2016.

Bystander intervention
Saji fainted and fell from the third floor of a Kochi lodge even as shocked passers-by looked on without taking him to the hospital.
A man who fell from the third floor of a building near Padma junction in Kochi was lying on the ground for nearly 15 minutes amidst the on-looking crowd, before being saved and admitted to the hospital by a high court lawyer. Saji, who hails from Thrissur, fainted and fell from a corridor of a Kochi lodge and was lying on the side of the road, even as shocked passers-by looked on without taking him to the hospital according to a report by Manorama. The apathy of the bystanders even prompted the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take to Facebook and ask the people of Kerala to help accident victims. In the post, the Chief Minister informed citizens about provisions available to bystanders who help victims. He said, “bystanders should not be wary of admitting accident victims to hospitals as there are provisions under the law for them.” The ‘Good Samaritan’ provisions that the Chief Minister is referring to are the guidelines provided by the Supreme Court to remove roadblocks that stop bystanders from intervening in case of road accidents and other such incidents. The guidelines say that neither police nor hospitals can detain a good Samaritan who helps an accident victim by taking them to the hospital. Further, a new provision will allow accident victims who are critical, 48 hours of free treatment. The post also reminded readers that saving the life of an accident victim or anybody else in a critical condition is indeed a noble gesture and encouraged readers to act sensitively and with initiative in such cases. The incident also caught the attention of popular Malayalam actor Jayasurya, who took to Facebook to do a live video and spread awareness about helping accident victims in distress. “Usually I only do a live to promote a video. However, this time it is to share a sad news. A man fell from a building in Kochi and it is really sad that none of the on-lookers did the basic, humane deed of taking him to the hospital,” he said. Clarifying that he was not blaming the on-lookers, Jayasurya said, “There might be two things that went through people’s minds. One is that maybe he is lying there drunk. Because that’s how we usually tend to think. And the second reason is that people are scared to take responsibility, fearing that they will get embroiled in court cases and police station procedures,” he said. Asking viewers to take this as a means to spread awareness, he also reiterated that saving a life is the most noble thing anyone can do. “If it were for our parents or siblings, we wouldn’t hesitate even for a second to take them to a hospital. And we must be able to do the same for others,“ he said.   Read: Karnataka set to become first Indian state to have a Good Samaritan law
