This comes after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ruled out an alliance with the Congress.

The CPI, an ally in the ruling Left government in Kerala, on Monday said that the Left should take the initiative in uniting all those opposed to the Right-wing BJP, after Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan ruled out an alliance with the Congress."It's foolish to assume that to fight a common enemy in the BJP-RSS, there is no need of anyone. We feel it's our responsibility to unite all those who are opposed to the BJP-RSS and the Left should take the lead in this," CPI state Secretary Kanam Rajendran said while inaugurating the Kollam district conference of the party. Even though the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) are allies in the ruling alliance, of late there have been serious differences of opinion between the two, with joining hands with the Congress being the latest. The CPI at the national level has already made its position clear, that they are ready for it. Last week, the opinion of CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury was put to vote at its Central Committee meeting and was voted out, as the Prakash Karat faction led by the entire Kerala unit of the party wanted that there should be no alliance with the Congress. Pinarayi dismissed the idea floated by party Yechury, saying, “It is important to put resistance to the growing threat of the BJP in the country, but the alternative should be formed on the basis of proper policies,” said Pinarayi. "We can only wish that those who have taken a position against this, think about it (again)," said Rajendran. With the district party meetings of the two communist parties reaching its last leg and heading for the state conference next month, the parties -- at their respective district meetings -- have been blaming the other for all the ills.  IANS inputs

Kerala HC issues notice to Centre over colour coding of passport

The HC was hearing a petition that argued that the move would expose the social status of a person publicly through the colour code.
The Kerala High Court on Monday questioned the Centre’s decision to introduce an orange colour cover for passports that require an emigration-check. The court pulled up the centre while hearing a public interest writ petition, filed by Shamsudeen from Kollam and another person, who claimed that the orange colour passports were introduced to segregate under-educated people, who have not passed their Class 10 examination. The petition stated that the Centre’s move would expose the status of a person publicly through the colour code, and was a gross invasion of the rights to privacy and dignity. The petition also mentioned that it violated the principle of equality.   Passport holders with the separate colour coding would be more prone to harassment and exploitation as their vulnerable status would be exposed through the colour, the petition argued. Earlier this month, the Ministry of External Affair decided to do away with the last page of the passport that contains the names of the spouse, parents and address of the passport-holder. It also changed the colour of ECR passports, largely availed of by unskilled workers seeking employment abroad. The last page also contains information such Emigration Check Required (ECR) and old passport number with date and place of issue of that passport."As the last page of the passport would not be printed now, the passport holders with ECR status would be issued a passport with orange colour passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar. ECR passport holders require clearance from the Protector General of Emigrants to go abroad in order to prevent exploitation. The Indian Security Press (ISP), Nasik, will be designing the new passport booklets in due course. Till such time the new passport booklets are designed, manufactured and made available to the Ministry by ISP, Nashik, the passports and other travel documents would continue to be printed with the last page."The existing passports would continue to remain valid till the date of expiry printed in the passport booklet," Kumar confirmed.  IANS inputs

‘Islamophobes behind Hadiya's father’: Former guardian Sainaba tells SC

Hadiya Case
In the counter affidavit filed at the SC, Sainaba denied any role in converting Hadiya.
Sainaba
Hadiya’s chosen guardian and a leader of National Women's Front (NWF), 45-year-old Sainaba has come down heavily on the Muslim convert's father Asokan, even calling him a pawn in the hands of Islamophobes. Sainaba, a respondent in the Hadiya case, said that the 25-year-old woman from Vaikkom in Kottayam district, has all the right to choose a religion of her choice. In a counter affidavit filed at the Supreme Court, Sainaba, who is the eighth respondent in the case, said that the Kerala High Court judgment from May 2017 annulling the marriage of Hadiya and Shafin Jahan is "wholly wrong, factually, legally and constitutionally." She added that the order has caused "gross miscarriage of justice." In her counter affidavit to Asokan's (first respondent) affidavit at the SC, Sainaba said that Islamophobic people were behind Hadiya's father and were using him to create unrest in the state. Denying allegations against her by Asokan, Sainaba said in her affidavit, "It is very clear from his bald and fallacious allegations that he is dancing in tune with the music played by somebody, who controls from behind reducing him to a pawn in their hands.""It is very clear that the first respondent is only dancing to the tune of music played by those, who are guided by Islamophobia and targeting Islam and believers of Islam," she said. Sainaba also pointed out that while Asokan had barred several people including the media, women activists and State Women's Rights Commission from meeting Hadiya, he allowed right wing people including BJP State President Kummanam Rajasekharan and activist Rahul Easwar to enter the house and hold talks with him. The allegation that Hadiya was brainwashed and heavily indoctrinated are "mere illusions and baseless allegations," Sainaba argued. Saying that she never brainwashed Hadiya to embrace Islam, Sainaba said that such allegations raised by Asokan "shows his misunderstanding and intolerance towards Islam." Sainaba said that Islam was the second largest religion in the world and that even to think that crores of people including eminent intellectuals and thinkers who embraced Islam did so out of "indoctrination" was "baseless and a perverse story." These "influential anti-social and anti-national persons and organisations, who nurture unwarranted Islamophobia and attempt to divide and polarize the society against Islam by any hook or crook with ulterior motives of achieving power destroying the harmony and national integrity," she said. She argued that these "desperate anti-social elements' have not been able to gain power in Kerala and that they will do so by any hook and crook to gain power in troubled waters and for this, they are first creating trouble themselves, by using Asokan. In her counter affidavit, Sainaba has also sought investigation against the “forces acting behind Asokan.” The case The case of conversion and subsequent marriage of Hadiya (born Akhila) to a Muslim man Shafin Jahan has reached the Supreme Court, with the latter moving a special leave petition against the Kerala High Court order annulling their marriage. While a bench of the SC had earlier in August last year ordered an NIA probe in to the case, a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India said that the NIA can probe anything but not the marriage of the duo. The court, that heard Hadiya in November last year, has now made her party to the case and have asked her to file an affidavit before the next hearing. Rs 20 lakh as compensation for dog-bite victims too high, Kerala govt tells SC

Compensation
While the SC-led committee has suggested sums as high as Rs 20 lakh be paid to victims of dog bite, the state has said the amount be capped at Rs 5 lakh.
The Kerala government recently expressed its apprehensions about the generous compensations the Supreme court-led committee has recommended to victims of dog bites. The SC-led committee, which comprised a former High Court, the State Law Secretary and the Director of Health Services, has recommended a generous compensation for victims of dog bites – in some cases, the suggested compensation is as high as Rs 20 lakh. The Kerala government wrote in its affidavit filed before the SC saying that the compensation would lead to “exorbitant amounts” being spent to treat dog bites. The complaint says that the SC committee should ideally cap the compensation at Rs 5 lakh for treatment for dog bites is free in the state, reports The Hindu. The government also said that since the compensation amount is paid by local self-government bodies, they will never be able to pay the sums suggested by the committee. Officials added that the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund is capped at Rs 5 lakh. Meanwhile, one of the panel members told The Hindu, “How can one limit the compensation to ₹5 lakh for a victim whose life is wrecked following dog bite? None of the victims who suffered irreparable damage would approach any legal forum for compensation.” The panel members also clarified that the compensation amount is decided after looking at the victim’s loss of livelihood, medical expense, loss of job, physical and mental pain and future security. They added that two children are now in a vegetative state after being injected the anti-rabies vaccine. Their reaction to the vaccine has shattered their lives and that of the families; therefore, such cases require a healthy compensation. Jose Maveli, a social activist, who actively advocates a stray dog-free movement told TNM, “The compensation can be fixed according to the seriousness of the case. I have seen an entire family suffer due to gruesome dog bites. The mental and physical agony of children whose faces are disfigured cannot be compensated with money.”  “The government has to find a way around this. Some effective steps have to be taken to control the menace without further delay,” he added. Kerala has been fighting a dog menace for a long time now, with over 1 lakh cases of dog bites being recorded, which lead to 10 deaths.

Will actor Manju Warrier be CPI (M)’s candidate in Kerala bye-election? No, says party

"The party has no plans of giving a ticket to any film star,” clarified CPI (M)'s Chengannur unit.
Manju Warrier/ Facebook
Will leading Malayalam actor Manju Warrier enter Kerala politics? What if she becomes the candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in the state? Will she not make a good politician, considering her image as a person who is involved in social causes? While the past few weeks saw numerous such questions being raised, it appears that these speculations can now be safely laid to rest.  On Tuesday, CPI (M) clarified that the party has no intentions to field Manju as a candidate. The death of CPI (M)'s KK Ramachandran, who was the sitting MLA of Alappuzha's Chengannur constituency earlier this month has necessitated a bye-election. While Manju's name was heard as one the probable names being considered for candidature, the district CPI (M) has now dismissed it."The party has no plans of giving a ticket to any film star. We have capable members within the party itself and the party will take the decision as to who will contest the bye-poll," said CPI (M)'s Alappuzha district secretary Saji Cherian. Speculation has been rife for the past few weeks over Manju's probable entry into politics. This was fuelled by the actor’S visit to Cyclone Ockhi-affected families in Thiruvananthapuram recently.  However, when political circles were abuzz over Manju’s entry into politics, the actor categorically denied any such plan. “I don’t see any reason to glorify my involvement in social issues. There are a lot of people who do a lot more for society outside the limelight. Since I am known to the public, even the smallest of my deeds are projected in a big way. I did not visit the cyclone affected area with a political motive. It is my social responsibility as well to help people in distress. My conscience is my motive, not political ambitions," Manju had clarified.  However, the rumours found new fodder yet again last week, after Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader KNA Khader told the Assembly that the LDF has plans to field Manju in the bye-elections. This was followed by media reports that claimed that the CPI (M) was in search of a fresh face to contest. Reports claimed that party's state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan himself, had already taken up the matter with Manju.

Protest
The prime demand is to include all the victims, battling various diseases from mental and physical disability to cancer, of the decades-long pesticide spraying.
Pics: Sreekesh Raveendran Nair.
Travelling with Nandana, a 14-year-old intellectually disabled child, all the way from Kasargode district in the northern end of Kerala to Thiruvananthapuram in the south is not an easy task for her mother Chandravathi. Nandana is a victim of the excessive aerial spraying of the pesticide endosulfan in Kasargode. She has come along with scores of children like her along with their parents. They have all come to protest in front of the Secretariat, the state administrative headquarters, on Tuesday to urge the government to disburse the compensation to all endosulfan victims. Nandana has only the brain growth of a two-year-old and Chandravathi takes care of her like she is a child. “I haven’t slept for the last 14 years since Nandana doesn’t sleep at night. She sleeps once in five days, but by 12 in the night she would wake up and start walking. My husband, my elder daughter and I aren’t able to sleep after this. Just imagine the task of travelling with her the whole night. I haven’t worked for 14 years neither have I stepped outside the house unless there is an emergency. Our whole family has got used to this now,” Chandravathi told TNM. Nandana is among the for endosulfan victims who have received compensation from the government.  “But we have to take part in the protest for others. We view it as an issue of the entire district, not simply that of an individual or a family,” said Chandravathi, who hails from Pallikkara panchayat.  Like Nandana and Chandravathi, nearly 250 persons, including children and women, are participating in the protest under the aegis of Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munnani. The protest was inaugurated by well-known activist Daya Bai. “We are sad that the children with disabilities and their mothers have to travel long distances to stage the protest. But we have no other option. If a favourable response doesn’t come by mid-March, we will start an indefinite strike. What we have done today is a token strike,” said Ambalathara Kunjikrishnan, Secretary of the Munnani. Why the protest? The prime demand is to include all the victims, battling various diseases from mental and physical disability to cancer, of the decades-long pesticide spraying in the cashew plantations of the state-owned Plantation Corporation in the district. Though the spraying of the pesticide stopped way back in 2000 owing to widespread protests and health issues caused by it, the ill-effects have been passed on to the next generation. The people of 11 panchayats and Kanjagad Municipality have been affected by the spraying in the district, which is the gravest human issue that the state has witnessed for years. The spraying began in the late 70s and continued for more than 20 years. The resulting diseases have been transmitted to generations over the years. Hundreds of children are born with congenital defects, which have changed the fate of their families as there is no permanent cure for these diseases. The last time the government conducted a medical camp was in mid-2017. After examining the patients at the camp, as many as 1,905 people were listed as victims of the pesticide spraying. But an endosulfan cell functioning in the district with the Collector as chairman changed the number to 287 persons, saying that non-deserving people had also found place in the list. Another demand of the protesters is the implementation of the 2017 Supreme Court order regarding compensation for the victims. The SC had directed that a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and lifetime treatment should be given to each of the victims. The order was the result of a petition filed by DYFI, the youth wing of the CPI (M). The government so far hasn’t followed the SC order fully. At the time the SC issued the order, the number of endosulfan victims were 5,848. Only 2,665 people out of that have been given compensation. In March 2017, the government had disbursed Rs 56.76 crore for the victims. But the protesters alleged that it didn’t cover all the victims as per the SC order and that there are still 3,183 people who are to be given compensation. The protesters also demand that a permanent tribunal be set up to find out the new victims to be included in the list and to ensure that compensation is given to all deserving people. “In the medical camp there were specialist doctors who decided who are the victims. How did the district administration decide that they don’t deserve compensation? With this change, several families who earlier had Below Poverty Line (BPL) ration cards lost their priority to be included in the BPL list. The ration cards have been changed to APL which deprived the families the benefits they used to get as BPL cardholders,” said Subramanian, who is part of the Munnani. Another demand of the victims’ families is to write off the bank loans availed by them to meet the treatment expenses for the victims. “The interest from these loans is mounting. The government should take a stand on this,” urged Subramanian. Government apathy “During the tenure of the Congress-led United Democratic Front government, the medical camp was conducted only once. The victims had done a day-night protest at the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s official residence demanding that compensation be disbursed. The Left, which was in the Opposition then, had given us support against the government. The DYFI had even approached the court. Now the Left is in power and we are fighting for the same cause. I don’t know why the government is reluctant to even carry out the SC’s orders. At present we have the support only of the media, not even that of human rights activists,” said Kunjikrishnan. “The government is keen to add people older than 70 in the endosulfan list… maybe because there won’t be a need to support them for long,” he lamented.

Padma awards
The Kerala government had recommended 42 names for the Padma awards, but the Centre chose to ignore all but one.
The divide between the Centre and Kerala State continues to grow, this time over the Padma awards. It has now come to light that only one recommendation by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government was accepted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The LDF government, as is the norm, had submitted a list of 42 people to the Centre for the civilian awards. But only one name eventually made the cut. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, the 101-year-old metropolitan bishop of the Marthoma Syrian Church was conferred the Padma Bhushan. The Padma Shri awardees from the state are palliative care messiah MR Rajagopal and Lakshmikutty Amma, a tribal medical practitioner. As the per the state’s list, there were 35 recommendations for Padma Shri, six for Padma Bhushan and one for Padma Vibhushan. The details were revealed in response to an RTI query filed by social activist Jomon Puthenpurackal. Kerala had recommended MT Vasudevan, the doyen of Malayalam literature for the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian award. However, the Centre’s choice was RSS ideologue P Parameswaran. The other recipients for the Padma Vibhushan are music composer Ilaiyaraaja, and Hindustani classical musician Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Padma Shri winners Lakshmikutty Amma and Rajagopal were not on the list of names sent by the state.  “Who has recommended for Parameswaran, whose name was not in the state list? How he has been chosen without his name being recommended? There are both Supreme Court and High Court orders that there shouldn’t be vested interest or politicisation while considering people for Padma awards. The choice should be just,” activist Jomon Puthenpurackal told TNM. Among the names recommended by the Kerala government for Padma Bhushan were Malayalam actors Mammootty and Mohanlal, poet Sugathakumari, Kathakali exponent Kalamandalam Gopi and Chenda artiste Peruvanam Kuttan Marar. Mammootty, Mohanlal and Sugathakumari had won the Padma Shri earlier. MR Rajagopal, who was awarded the Padma Shri this year, was on the list of names sent by the state government in 2017. Jomon also hit out at the Kerala government for failing to recommend new names to the Centre, pointing out that the state was equally guilty of being partisan. “There are some people who find place in the government list every year. If a name is rejected once what is the need to send it again? There are many unknown faces who really deserve these honours, why doesn’t the government not send fresh names? Also, what is the need to recommend the names of those who already have received Padma Shri, for Padma Bhushan. Now the practice is like those who have influence on government will get Padma awards,” Jomon said. In 2017 the government had sent a list of 24 names. In this year’s list the names recommended for Padma Shri awards include Soorya Krishnamurthy, known for conducting Soorya art festival, Kathakali exponent Chavara Parukutty, sculptor Kanayi Kunhi Raman, movie artist Nedumudi Venu, noted oncologist VP Ganadharan, CPI leader E Chandrasekharan (posthumously), footballer IM Vijayan, to name a few.

Petition in HC seeks ban on Manju Warrier film ‘Aami’, claims it justifies Love Jihad

The Manju Warrier starrer is a biopic on the acclaimed Malayalam writer Madhavikutty and is expected to hit the theatres soon.
Ahead of the release of director Kamal’s upcoming film Aami - a biopic on the acclaimed writer Madhavikutty alias Kamala Das, a petition has been filed in the Kerala High Court seeking a ban on the film. The petitioner has asked for a directive to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), restraining it from issuing a censor certificate for the film.  The petition filed by HC lawyer KP Ramachandran, states that the film is made with the intention of supporting and justifying ‘Love Jihad’.  The petitioner also accused director Kamal of twisting the real life incidents of Madhavikutty in the name of film-making freedom."The conversion of Madhavikutty into Islam was the beginning of "love jihad" in Kerala. Love jihad is the grave menace the society now faces in Kerala”, reads the petition, reports TOI."This hon'ble high court of Kerala had occasion to go deep into the subject and came out with shocking revelations that love jihad is taking place in an enormous manner. Now the well-oiled machineries are working for meeting the said end. The film 'Aami' is intended to be a catalystic agent for the said process," adds the petition. The petitioner also said that by emphasising on the aspect of religious conversion, the film would send a wrong message to the society at a time when it is vulnerable to religious issues.  He also blamed director Kamal for using his position as the president of Kerala State Chalachithra Academy for this purpose, reports The Express. Accusing the director of skipping the true incidents in the life of Madhavikutty, the petition alleged that former Muslim League MP and orator Abdul Samad Samadani had developed intimacy with her and converted her to Islam as part of a terrorist-funded plan. When Madhavikutty learned about the plot, she was upset over it and lost faith in Islam.  The petitioner alleges that these critical details have been omitted from the film to justify Love Jihad and give a clean chit to Samadani, added the report. Madhavikutty, who was also known later as Kamala Surayya, was criticised for her writing when she appeared on the literary scene.  She was among the first Indian women writers to openly write about female sexuality and also courted controversy when she later converted to Islam.

Sreejeev death: After 783 days, Sreejith calls off protest as CBI records his statement

After his statement was taken, Sreejith declared that he was happy about the development.
After Sreejith’s protest demanding justice for his brother gained massive support from people across Kerala, he called off his agitation on Wednesday after the CBI recorded his statement.  Once his statement was taken, Sreejith declared that he was happy about the development."We were told that investigation is progressing. So far, I am satisfied and happy with how the CBI enquiry is going on," Sreejith told the media. Sreejith and his mother, Remani, reached the CBI office in Thiruvananthapuram a little after 11 am. Sreejith has been protesting for the 783 days in front of the Kerala Secretariat demanding a CBI probe into his brother Sreejeev’s death, who died in police custody. Even though the agency finally agreed to investigate his brother’s death on January 19, Sreejith continued his protest, saying that he would end it only once there is clarity about the probe.   At the time, Sreejith’s mother Remani demanded that the police personnel responsible for Sreejeev’s death be suspended. "We need to see that the probe actually begins to end the protest. My son's health has deteriorated after being on protest for so long. We want justice," Remani had then told the media. In May 2014, Sreejith’s brother Sreejeev was taken into custody by the Parassala police on allegations of theft. Days later, he died in a hospital. While police officials maintain that Sreejeev consumed poison, his family accused the officers of murder and cited custodial torture as the reason for his death. Sreejeev was taken into custody by the Parassala police in May 2014 on being accused of theft. Days later, he died in a hospital. While the police maintained that Sreejeev consumed poison, his family accused the officers of murder and cited custodial torture as the reason behind his death. In 2016, the Police Complaint Authority investigation found that his death was indeed caused by custodial torture and that the police version of the events was concluded as false. In September 2016, the Kerala government asked the Director General of Police to hand over the probe to a Special Investigations Team (SIT). While Sreejith and his family were granted a compensation of Rs 10 lakh by the state government, they continued to demand that the police officers responsible for Sreejeev’s death be suspended. Sreejith’s protest for his brother stirred public conscience in Kerala, with a number of actors, including Nivin Pauly, Tovino Thomas, Parvathy and Prithiviraj, among others, demanding justice. A parallel social media campaign also gathered storm, culminating in a protest in solidarity for Sreejith on January 14. A day later, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan met Sreejith and Remani and promised that the state would write again to the Centre seeking a CBI probe.

Awareness Drive
The recent spike in fatal road accidents has pushed cops to flag the spots where they occurred in a bid to highlight the consequences of rash driving.
Kozhikode’s traffic police is on a mission to spread awareness on the consequences of rash driving – one marking at a time. The recent spike in accidents in the city has prompted cops to mark the spots where lives were lost, in a bid to push people into driving more carefully.  The ongoing project aims to cover all the road accident deaths the city witnessed in 2017, by marking the spots with a yellow square and a red blotch.  “In 2017, close to 107 fatal bike accidents were recorded in Kozhikode city. Out of these, 80 of them were bike riders and 27 were riding pillion. Apart from this, 53 pedestrians also lost their lives due to the recklessness of drivers. We (the traffic police) conceived an idea to mark those places where a death occurred, just to remind motorists how easily misfortune could befall those being reckless on the roads,” said Sreejith TP, city traffic inspector, Kozhikode.   The project was started a week ago and the police aim to cover all 107 spots in the coming weeks. “Some of the areas marked are Thondayad Bypass road, Feroke Chungam road in the southern area of the city and Chettikulam in north Kozhikode. We want this to be a sombre reminder of the consequences of being reckless,” he added.   Stating that every action on the road has stipulated rules and norms, he said, “People drive cars and bikes like they are operating just another machine, it is mechanical. They don’t practice passive driving or sensitive driving or even obey the road rules.” When asked how effective this awareness campaign would be, he said, “I’m not sure people are going to change just with this drive. But we have to start somewhere. We are on the verge of heralding a new driving culture. Now, it is a chaotic phase and it will be for the next four or five generations, until a new and improved driving culture sets in.” The traffic police also hope that other cities in Kerala will soon follow suit and conduct awareness campaigns about safe driving.  “In Kerala alone, around 4000 lives are lost every year to road accidents. We hope that at least when they notice these marks, people will remember to drive safely,” Sreejith concluded.

3 women assault mentally ill neighbour in Kerala in broad daylight

The video of the incident showed the three women verbally abusing and beating up the woman.

A middle-aged woman lies on the road, with her hands tightly covering the back of her head. As the woman lies motionless, two women repeatedly beat her with what looks like a rod. A third woman proceeds to keep a hot spatula on her sole, at which point, the woman gets up and runs for her life.  This is an incident that happened in Kerala's Kochi on Monday, in broad daylight and in the presence of several people. However, despite three women beating up 43-year-old Ambili*, who is mentally ill according to the police, not one came forward to stop the assault.  Ambili was dragged out of a tea shop at Pallipuram in Vypeen, in the neighbourhood she has been living in for years, along with her husband and two daughters.  According to the police, the three women- Liji, Teena and Molly- accused Ambili of creating a ruckus and proceeded to assault her on the road on Monday. "Liji, Teena and Molly had come to the station to complain against Ambili that morning. They alleged that Amibili threw stones at their houses regularly. When the three women were on their way back home, they happened to see Ambili at the tea shop. They claim that Ambili threw a stone at them, and provoked them to beat her up in public. From the tea shop, Liji took a hot spatula and burned Ambili's sole," Munambam Sub-Inspector Shiju told TNM.  Ambili sustained injuries on her forehead and sole.  The three women have been charged under IPC Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.  Police say that this was not the first time that Ambili and her family have faced the ire of the neighbours.  Why the apathy? Police say that Ambili has been mentally ill for the past three years and the neighbours had been repeatedly complaining that she was creating trouble. In 2016, for instance, 60 neighbours signed a petition and submitted to the police, demanding that Ambili be shifted to a mental health hospital. "That time, when we took her to a psychiatrist, he said that she had some minor issues and didn't need hospitalisation. But neighbours say, she continued to cause trouble," the SI said.  However, the police say that they have begun the process to shift Ambili to a mental health hospital in the neighbouring district of Thrissur. "Today (Wednesday) morning, the neighbours called us again, saying that Ambili threw stones at the houses of those arrested. We took her to a psychiatrist who confirmed that Ambili should be shifted to a mental hospital. After consulting a physician and making sure her health is alright, we will start the procedures," the police said.

It was advocate Ranjanie Ramanandan's timely intervention that helped save Saji’s life.
A woman stands in the middle of a busy road at night, trying to talk to people gathered near her. While some men walk off, some can be seen standing there, even as the woman speaks to them with urgency.  When the people around her choose to not respond, she can be seen fishing out her mobile phone from her bag and desperately calling someone.  Soon enough, you get to know the reason for the woman's urgent calls for help- an injured man lies on the road, with not one person coming forward to take the him to the hospital.  This act by Kochi-based lawyer Ranjanie Ramanandan has now saved the life of Saji, who fell off a multi-storeyed building near Padma junction in the city, a few days ago.  When Saji fell off the building onto a scooter parked on the road, not one bystander came forward to take him to the hospital. He lay in a pool of blood for at least 20 minutes, before Ranjanie managed to convince the people to help her get medical help. Days after the incident, visuals of Saji's fall, Ranjanie was lauded for her humanitarian gesture.  While some on social media called her the "advocate of humanity" Kerala Chief Minister took notice of her act.  On Tuesday, Ranjanie the State Legislative Assembly also lauded the lawyer’s timely intervention.  TNM caught up with Ranjanie, a practicing lawyer at Kerala High Court.  In a calm but firm voice, advocate Ranjanie says that she never anticipated what would happen. "My daughter and I were going to the metro station, when we saw this man lying in a pool of blood. We didn't know how he got there, whether it was a road accident... But the only thought that came to my mind was that he needed to be taken to the hospital, since I noticed that he was still alive," she narrates.  However, people around her were hesitant to come forward to help the injured man. "Maybe they were scared that they would have to take up the responsibility if they take him to the hospital. But that is because of their ignorance of the law. Our police and law is quite liberal, anyone can take an injured person to the hospital, they will not get into trouble. They didn't openly tell me that they were scared to take the man to the hospital, but it was evident from their faces," Ranjanie says.  While attempts to take Saji in an autorickshaw failed, Ranjanie stopped a car and convinced them to take him to the hospital. "I called up Suchindra Mission hospital, but then they did not have an ambulance to send, but said that they will attend to the patient if we take him there immediately. After I said this to the people, they were more willing to listen. I told them they just had to go with the man, all arrangements had been made at the hospital," she says.  As praise continues to come her way, the Kochi police felicitated Ranjanie and her daughter Vishnupriya on Tuesday. "Even at that event, the police emphasized that nobody should be scared," she says.

Fear Mongering
News about these stickers quickly went viral on social media and even caught the attention of the Chief Minister.
Prasanthlal Trivandrum Voice/Facebook
Over the past few days, mysterious black stickers have cropped up on windows and walls of houses in the southern districts of Kerala, sparking panic among residents.  The police have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause behind the appearance of these stickers. The black diamond-shaped stickers were spotted on the corners of the windows in houses predominantly in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Thodupuzha. They were first spotted in Thiruvananthapuram. News about the appearance of these stickers began to spread on social media after people began to suspect that it was the work of child trafficking groups. Word began to spread that the stickers were to identify houses with children in them. “The stickers were spotted in my father’s room. Sometimes, my daughter sleeps in that room with her granddad. At first, we didn’t pay much attention to it, but then we remembered the post on Facebook and checked once again. That’s when we saw that these were the same black stickers pasted on two corners of the glass,” Sunitha, a resident of Eroor junction in Kochi, told Asianet News. However, Kerala Director General of Police Loknath Behra spoke to the media and assured the public that the all the police control rooms have been alerted and the stickers are being sent for forensic examination. “We are going to examine those stickers. I have given special instructions to the South Zone ADG and Trivandrum IG to take the matter seriously. There is no need to panic. We are looking into the incident,” Behra told Asianet News. The DGP also confirmed that the incidents have occurred in the southern districts of Kerala. “Nothing has been reported until now in the north,” he said. The incidents which generated hysteria among residents also caught the attention of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who took to Facebook to allay fears regarding these black stickers. “Range IGs have been tasked with investigating the mysterious sticks that have appeared on the windows of houses,” the post said, adding that the CM spoke about this in the Assembly too. “As soon as the news caught the attention of the government, the DGP was informed and he further alerted all police control rooms, cyber cells and police station,” the post also said. The CM’s post also confirmed that the stickers were found in certain houses in Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram. “Not only are such concerns being investigated, the police are also working to curb the spread of terrifying messages,” the post added. This is not the first time that cryptic symbols and markings have appeared on houses in Kerala. In 2016, Pathanamthitta SP, Hari Shankar IPS, took to Facebook to warn people about the symbols used by thieves to mark a house before a robbery attempt. He asked people to wipe off any symbols on compound walls or pillars as they are an indication that the house is under observation for robbery. The symbols included rating the house as a “good target” to “nothing worth stealing from”.

Saseendran had quit as Kerala Transport Minister in 2017 over a sleaze charge and was cleared last week.
NCP leader AK Saseendran, who had to quit as Kerala Transport Minister in 2017 over a sleaze charge, will be sworn in as a minister on Thursday. The NCP leader had to resign in March 2017 after a sleaze chat of his with a woman journalist had surfaced. Last week, a court cleared Saseendran of the charge. Kerala Governor P Sathasivam will administer the oath of office to Saseendran in the Raj Bhavan. On Wednesday, one Maha Lekshmi filed a fresh petition in the Kerala High Court questioning the way the case was disposed of, by the lower court. Lekshmi had earlier also approached the lower court requesting that Saseendran should not be cleared. But her plea was dismissed. Saseendran is expected to get back the Transport portfolio, which has been with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan since March. The court on Saturday, gave a clean chit to Saseendran after the woman journalist backtracked on her statements. In March 2017, Saseendran resigned over an audio clip in which he was heard having a lewd conversation with the journalist. Last week, the journalist told the court that Saseendran never misbehaved with her. She was also not sure whether it was the former Minister who had spoken to her over the phone. The Congress-led-opposition has cried foul over the probe and has questioned the morality behind the re-induction of Saseendran. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said that by giving the ministerial position to Saseendran once again, the real face of the LDF, which often takes the moral high ground on issues, has been exposed. “His acquittal by court doesn’t mean that what was wrong is not wrong. Everyone had heard the voice of Saseendran in the audio clip. He hadn’t denied that it was his voice. His sudden resignation was caused by guilt,” Chennithala said in a statement. (With IANS inputs)

The Kochi police have registered an FIR and a case was taken under IT Act of 67 A.
Kochi police on Thursday arrested one person after Shani Prabhakaran, chief news producer at Manorama News channel, filed a complaint against online harassment.  She alleged that a photograph of her with CPI (M) MLA from Thripunithura, M Swaraj, inside an elevator, was being used to defame her.  The person arrested has been identified as PV Vaishak from Alappuzha. Kochi police have registered an FIR and a case was taken under IT Act of 67 A (Punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act, etc., in electronic form.) Police officials later told media that the case will be investigated in detail without delay. Shani Prabhakaran had written the complaint to the Director General of Police on Thursday. In her complaint to the police chief, Shani said that a photograph of her with CPI (M) MLA from Thripunithura, M Swaraj, inside an elevator was used to spread false news about her and the cyber bullies had resorted to character assassination."These people have been spreading highly degrading comments about me on Facebook and WhatsApp, by sharing a picture of me along with a friend and MLA M Swaraj. These people are spreading demeaning comments with sexual undertones," reads her complaint.  Shani hosts the popular show Parayathe Vayya and primetime debate called Counter Point on Manorama News. She is a journalist who is noted for refraining from asking sugar-coated questions to the politicians. Shani has also been labeled as a supporter of the Left by right wing factions.  The "leaked" photographs were first circulated by an online news portal Narada News along with an article claiming that Shani held talks with Swaraj to get enlisted as a CPI (M) candidate in Ernakulam. The article also claimed that the talks were held with the knowledge of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Reviving Sokanasini: How a village library in Kerala is on a quest to save a dying river

River Rejuvenation
Plagued by toxic algal blooms and shrinking at an alarming rate, the life source of Kerala’s literary past and present is ailing.
It could well be the waters that birthed the great language of Malayalam, for it was on the banks of the ‘Sokanasini’ in Chittur that Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan, father of the Malayalam language, penned down the first letters of the script. Ezhuthachan, who lived and breathed his last on the banks of this river, translated the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata into a script inspired by both Tamil and Sanskrit. The language thrived and birthed generations of native speakers (the entire state of Kerala), not to forget countless literary classics.  However, the river that inspired him is today in a sorrowful state. Plagued by toxic algal blooms and shrinking at an alarming rate, the life source of Kerala’s literary past and present is ailing. However, all hope is not lost as Panchajanyam, a tiny village library, concerned about the river’s condition, has embarked on a decade long quest to revitalise this literary and cultural icon of Chittur. “We are a small taluk in Palakkad and our river is the source of water in the town. However, for years now, the Sokanasini has been starved of water and choked by algae and sediments. We have taken a 1 km stretch on the southern banks of the river and cleared the algae and sediments from the river bed,” said Madhusudhanan, a member of the Sokanasini Samrakhshana Samiti in Chittur. The members have plans of using watershed management and rain water harvesting techniques to boost the water levels in the river. “We will be cleaning up the dried up chaalukal or drains near the street sides and houses. The water captured during the rains will be channeled to the river through these newly cleaned drains, recharging the river water levels,” Madhusudhanan said. Acknowledging that not much can be done as, according to them,  the scourge of water scarcity begins with the check dams that block the natural flow of the river, the members have resorted to smaller ways to recharge the water levels. “The river which runs its course through Palakkad, Malappuram and Ponani takes 12 hours to drain into the Arabian sea. However, its flow is blocked by various necessary and unnecessary check dams that lie on its course. Since the water from the dams are not released, we are trying to recharge the river in other, smaller and natural ways,” he said.   The library also undertook a clean-up of the banks by clearing overgrown weeds and removing plastics. They also collected funds from residents and brought JCBs to remove the sediment deposits in the river. “The river is not entirely dried-up. There are strong base currents and with a little effort from the community we can save it,” said Madhusudhanan. Further, the members also aim to spread awareness in schools and colleges and rope in NCC and NSS cadets for future clean-up drives. “During April and May, there is acute water scarcity. But with the arrival of the monsoons, everyone forgets this and resumes wasting water. We want to change this pattern,” he said. The week old initiative was conceived by the library in the beginning of the year. “Puduvarsham Puzhayodoppam (new year with the river) is the slogan we use to spread awareness about the initiative. And we hope to inspire other districts and towns around the Sokanasini and other areas to come together and help their rivers. We know that it will take several years and many more library groups like ours to revive the whole river. But this is a start,” he said. The library, which is looking at gradual and holistic revival of the river, also aims to build bathing facilities on the river bank for the people. “Just as the river lived inside Ezhuthachan,we want the Sokanasini to also be a part of the people of Chittur and live inside them,” he said.

It was on this day in 1976 that Kamala Das released her autobiography 'My Story'.
Kamala Das, one of India’s most celebrated poets who crafted a new definition of feminism through her literary work, was honoured by Google with a doodle on Thursday. She is also popularly known by her pseudonyms Madhavikutty and later Kamala Surayya, after she converted to Islam. Born in Thrissur district in Kerala in 1934 to VM Nair, a former managing editor of Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi, and Nalapat Balamani Amma, a renowned Malayali poet, she rocked the world of Malayalam literature as a female writer who discussed women’s sexuality at a time when it was considered a taboo. Her maternal great uncle was the famous Malayalam writer Nalapat Narayana Menon. The doodle, created by artist Manjit Thapp, “celebrates the work she left behind, which provides a window into the world of an engrossing woman,” Google said in a blog post. The poet spent most of her childhood in Calcutta and began her writing in English. After she got married to a banker, Madhava Das, at the age of 15, she became Kamala Das. Kamala has written many short stories and poems on various women issues in Malayalam, English and Hindi. She later adopted the pen name Madhavikutty for her vernacular readers. On Feb 1, 1976, Kamala Das released her autobiography My Story. Written originally in English, she translated it to Malayalam along the way. The book was an honest account of her life’s journey from childhood to adolescence and later marriage and her personal relationships. It was widely criticised but embraced at the same time by readers across the country. Many even wanted to shelf the autobiography. Kamala converted to Islam at the age of 65 and faced heavy criticism for her decision. Kamala has also received many awards such as the Sahitya Akademi award, Asian World Prize, Kent Award and the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. Kamala Das bid adieu to the world on May 31, 2009 after suffering from acute diabetes, at the age of 75 in Pune, leaving behind her marvellous works. A biopic on her, titled Aami, is being filmed in Malayalam by director Kamal starring actor Manju Warrier. The picture is expected to hit the theatres soon.

A Malayalam writer has accused the 'Aadhi' director of 'lifting' the story from his work.
Popular Malayalam director Jeethu Joseph, who is basking in the success of his latest film Aadhi starring Pranav Mohanlal, has been caught up in a plagiarism row.  A Kerala-based writer has now accused Jeethu of plagiarising his story.  Calling a press meet in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, VS Jayakumar, editor of Oliver Publications in the city, alleged that director Jeethu had "lifted" a story he had published in 2011.  According to Times of India, the story in question is Jayakumar's 2011 work called Ente Weekend Party (My Weekend Party), that was later re-published in a book titled Interval in 2013.  "The book was released by Japanese director Ryota Nakano at the International Film Festival of Kerala in the same year. The story was submitted to the festival as part of its event 'Project Speech'. I believe that Joseph got the story from the Chalachitra Academy, the organiser of the festival," Jayakumar was quoted as saying.  He has reportedly filed a complaint with the chief minister against the academy and said that he will resort to legal recourse.  However, a day after this, Jeethu Joseph denied the plagiarism allegations in an interview given to Asianet Online.  Speaking to the website, Jeethu reportedly said that the story of Aadhi is his own. "I don't know anything about this allegation, nor do I know anything about his intentions. The story of Aadhi came to me when I was studying in college," he said.  Jeethu also added that different people are capable of coming up with the same storyline.  Interestingly, his 2013 block-buster film Drishyam starring Mohanlal in the lead role, had also run into controversy, after a plagiarism allegation was raised against the film.  Satheesh Paul, the director of the Malayalam film named Finger Print had accused Jeethu Joseph of lifting content from his published book Oru Mazhakaalathu.  However, a Kerala court had later given a clean chit to the director. Speaking about this controversy in the interview, Jeethu said: "A similar controversy erupted during the time of Drishyam. The allegation was that the story is inspired from a short story. But when we enquired, we couldn't find any such story!" During the same time, there were also allegations that Drishyam was inspired by a Japanese movie Suspect X. However, Jeethu had categorically denied the allegations.

The Government Brennen College in Thalassery in Kerala witnessed a college-wide protest on Wednesday evening after the Principal summoned a girl student to her room for talking to a male friend inside the campus. It all started when a girl student was spending her free hour with a male friend around 3 pm on Wednesday. The Principal of the college, NL Beena, summoned the girl to her room and allegedly insulted her verbally for what the Principal said was ‘immoral’ behaviour. The Principal allegedly questioned the student on who the person she was talking to and how he was related to her. “After the girl was summoned to the Principal’s room, she was asked whom she was talking to. When she replied that the male student was her brother, the Principal asked her how he was related to her,” says Akhil, a Students’ Federation of India (SFI) worker. “The girl then replied that all seniors are called brothers in the college and also told the Principal that she was outside the class because it was a free hour. The Principal then abused and shamed her,” added Akhil. After learning about the incident, the students organised a protest under the leadership of SFI and marched to the Principal’s room, demanding that she apologise. “This was totally outrageous and uncalled for. We marched to the Principal’s room and demanded that the Principal apologise to the girl student,” said Akhil. Under mounting pressure from the protesting students, the Principal supposedly apologised to the girl student and the protest was called off later in the day. However, talking to TNM, the Principal denied that she shamed the student and claimed that an ordinary college incident was turned into an unnecessary controversy. “It is not correct that I apologised. I did not apologise to the student neither did I hurl abuses at her. We don’t have issues with girls talking to boys inside the campus. We have given them that freedom,” Beena said. “In this particular case, the girl was talking to her friend for a prolonged time and I summoned her after I received many complaints from teachers and other staff on that day. In the presence of the HoD of her department I only asked her whom was she talking to and informed her of the complaints that I received,” added Beena. Beena had faced a similar issue in Maharajas College in Kochi and was transferred to Brennen College after the incident. The students had then burnt her chair in the office. “I have faces a similar incident in Maharajas College. I joined Maharajas as Principal in 2015 and I was thoroughly disappointed with the academic performance of the institution. The pass percentage had hit rock bottom and I decided to become strict with the attendance requirements of the college,” recalled Beena. “One day when I was doing my routine rounds I found a group of girls and boys talking loudly and disturbing the adjacent class. I asked them to disperse. I asked the girls what the necessity was to waste time during class hours… and that was turned into a controversy. I had written an apology letter back then,” said Beena. “The students who burnt my chair were dismissed by the College Council. They even transferred me so the students can be taken back by the college, but till date the students have not gotten back into the college. They are wasting their time by unnecessarily locking horns with teachers,” claimed Beena. Meanwhile, Dharmadom police reached the college to disperse the students and ensure that law and order was maintained, after the Principal called for help.
